The building is decorated in an original style, and on the sign, you can see an element of corporate identity, a neat New England Aquarium logo with a themed element. It evokes direct associations with the underwater world and its inhabitants. This is evidenced by the appropriate coloring, reminiscent of the depths of the sea, as well as a minimalist image of a representative of the marine fauna. The emblem so clearly reflects the brand’s essence that it has not changed throughout the company’s existence. This fact also testifies to the company’s stable operations and the value of its achievements.

New England Aquarium: Brand overview

New England Aquarium grew out of Boston’s waterfront renewal in the early 1960s. Central Wharf, once a busy commercial port, had become a declining industrial area, and the city wanted a modern public institution there. Boston had aquariums as early as the 1880s, but the last one, the South Boston Aquarium at Marine Park, closed in the 1950s.

The new project began in 1962 under the leadership of banker and civic figure David B. Stone, president of the New England Aquarium Corporation. Architect Peter Chermayeff of Cambridge Seven Associates designed a concrete building with a large atrium and a four-story cylindrical tank. The aquarium opened on June 20, 1969, drawing more than 12,000 visitors on the first day and about 425,000 in its first year.

Its main feature was the Giant Ocean Tank, a 760,000-liter Caribbean reef exhibit with sharks, tropical fish, barracudas, and sea turtles viewed from several levels. In 1970, the green sea turtle Myrtle became its best-known resident. In 1971, the Harold E. Edgerton Research Laboratory was founded, and the aquarium later became known as Hoover. This harbor seal imitated human speech with a Boston accent.

In 1974, the Discovery barge expanded marine mammal exhibits. During the 1970s, the aquarium developed long-running research on North Atlantic right whales and began whale-watching trips to Stellwagen Bank. Later milestones included breeding queen triggerfish from eggs in 2010 and opening the Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank in 2011. Its public rivals include Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut.

Meaning and History

New England Aquarium Logo History

Each feature of the unique ocean reservoir is directly reflected in the visual identity. It is based on a cute logo featuring several thematic elements that convey the brand’s core values and direction. The picture immediately suggests associations with the sea, the ocean, and the inhabitants who live there. The water theme is emphasized in every detail. Designers have chosen the appropriate graphic element, color scheme, and parts layout. As a result, everything in a beautiful logo harmoniously combines, and the overall composition is quite memorable.

The New England Aquarium is a unique community aquarium. If other similar organizations started with small premises and a limited budget, then the presented complex was initially impressed with its scale. It was founded in 1969 and was already then one of the largest ocean reservoirs in the world. But the leadership didn’t stop there. Over time, new tank displays were opened at the aquarium, and it later received full accreditation. All this time, the complex had the same logo.

What is New England Aquarium?

The New England Aquarium is a large complex with many tanks in which representatives of hundreds of fish species and thousands of other animals live. It is located in Boston (Massachusetts), on an area of about 7 m2. Here you can see various underwater inhabitants that cannot be found in ordinary water bodies. In addition, there is a specialized department where you can watch huge whales (The New England Aquarium Whale Watch) and the fascinating Simons Theater.

New England Aquarium Symbol

The picture is a light, fresh, and stylish combination of minimalist elements. Visually, it is divided into two parts: a word mark and a decorative symbol. The first was a two-level inscription – New England Aquarium. For the word design, a strict, affirmative font was used, which conveyed the company’s serious intentions and a responsible approach to business. Purposefulness, resilience, and readiness for development were visible in clear lines.

On the inscription, the side was another important element, a beautiful, neat circle with the image of a fish. The icon is quite simple yet stylish. It is decorated with thick, rounded lines that draw the head, eye, and tail. The picture itself is inside the circle, on a stylish striped background. Due to this design, associations are created with a vest – an element of sailors’ clothing. Combining these elements emphasizes the brand’s essence, so the symbol as a whole is a key detail of the logo.

He seems to make it clear that there are inhabitants of the underwater world. In addition, the concept provides for the corresponding light color, complemented by the base shade. The chosen colors symbolize trust, purity, openness, and reliability. For many, the palette is associated with the water element. In the context of the presented emblem, the coloring represents the natural habitat of the animals found in the New England Aquarium.

Font and Colors

New England Aquarium Emblem

In the New England Aquarium logo, you can trace several lines that connect the image into a single, solid element, demonstrating the company’s main advantages and direction. One of these lines provides for a strict yet stylish design of the word mark. The inscription is in capital and small letters. Their style combines two formats: Europa Grotesk SB Med Cond and Helvetica Bold Condensed.

These fonts lack serifs, and their lines are slightly narrow in some areas. These nuances make the inscription outstanding and original, which emphasizes the progressiveness of the New England Aquarium. The logo elements are designed in 3 colors that balance each other. The verbal inscription is presented in classic black, symbolizing authority and professionalism. Blue and white shades were used for the graphic symbol.

Blue symbolizes trust and comfort, while white emphasizes responsibility and integrity. These features are key to the well-known company’s philosophy. The management of New England Aquarium provides ideal conditions for animals and fish, is constantly improving, and cares about each visitor’s convenience. As a result, the complex has become one of the best in its segment and offers services to visitors worldwide.
