Northrop Grumman grew from two separate U.S. aviation histories. Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was founded in 1929 on Long Island by Leroy R. Grumman and partners. It focused on carrier aircraft for the U.S. Navy, building a reputation through the F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat in World War II. In the 1960s, Grumman built the Apollo lunar module, and in 1970, completed the F-14 Tomcat.
Northrop’s line began with John Northrop, who founded several aircraft companies before creating Northrop Aircraft, Inc. in California in 1939. His main engineering obsession was the flying wing. During World War II, the company built the P-61 Black Widow and later tested the XB-35 and YB-49. The idea was rejected at the time, but returned in 1981 with the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which first flew in 1989.
Northrop also produced the F-5, the T-38 Talon, and worked with McDonnell Douglas on the F/A-18 Hornet. In 1994, Northrop bought Grumman for $2.17 billion, forming Northrop Grumman. The new company expanded through Westinghouse Electronic Systems in 1996, Logicon in 1997, Litton Industries and Newport News Shipbuilding in 2001, and TRW in 2002.
Northrop Grumman became one of the main U.S. defense contractors, competing with Lockheed Martin and Boeing Defense. In 2011, it spun off shipbuilding as Huntington Ingalls Industries. In 2018, it bought Orbital ATK for $9.2 billion. The company later served as prime contractor for the James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, and saw the B-21 Raider make its first flight in 2022.

After all, as you know, the Northrop Grumman logo was changed in 2020 to align with modern trends. And the previous version was recognized as obsolete and inconsistent with evolutionary processes.

1994 – 2020
The first Northrop Grumman logo was introduced in 1994. It contained the company’s name, which it received in honor of its predecessors. The words occupied one line and consisted of bold italic sans-serif letters. The inscription was underlined by an uneven, thin line that curved sharply on the left. The slogan “Defining the future” could be placed at the bottom in special cases. There was also a variant with the phrase “The Value of Performance.” located at the top. All elements were dark blue, and white space served as the background.
2020 – today
In 2020, Northrop Grumman reimagined its brand to match its pioneering spirit. The changes, as expected, were reflected in the logo, which became clearer and acquired a strict geometric shape. Nel Sparkman created it as part of a design team led by director Justin Walsh. The specialist made the letters uniform by removing serifs while keeping the bold style.
The wordmark is now split into two lines, with the first line aligned to the left and the second to the right. The curved line disappeared, but next to the inscription, a strip formed a right angle. The color, as before, is dark blue, although the shade has changed a bit. But there is also a monochrome icon, where the white letters “NG” with the same white right angle are inside a black square.
Font and Colors
The fundamental symbol of Northrop Grumman is a right angle. The company informally calls it Forward Mark. It represents movement, growth, and the desire to take a leading position. The inspiration for this geometric element was the surrounding reality: partly the shape of a military aircraft’s nose, partly the square cells of the periodic table of chemical elements. That is, here, you can trace the reference to the scientific knowledge that underlies many technologies and to the manufacturer’s innovative products.
Nel Sparkman used a font called Futura Maxi for the Northrop Grumman wordmark. It has a counterpart: the geometric sans serif Touche Bold, created by designer Jonny Pinhorn and released by the Indian Type Foundry in 2015. This is an example of non-standard forms because all the letters appear monolinear, despite the wide, elongated strokes. But the color scheme, by contrast, is very simple: the logo’s main version uses only dark blue (a shade close to #00219b) and white.
