Odd Future: Brand overview

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All was formed in Los Angeles in 2007 around rapper and producer Tyler Okonma, known as Tyler, the Creator. He first imagined the project as a magazine, but the idea shifted into music. Early members included Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Matt Martians, Jasper Dolphin, Taco Bennett, and Syd tha Kyd. Later, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Casey Veggies, and Frank Ocean joined.

The group built its audience online, without a label or advertising budget. In November 2008, it released The Odd Future Tape as a free mixtape. Radical followed in 2010, while members issued solo and group projects that shaped the collective’s fan base. That year, Casey Veggies left for a solo career, Brandun DeShay exited after a conflict with Tyler, and Earl Sweatshirt was sent to a school in Samoa.

The breakthrough came in 2011. Frank Ocean released Nostalgia, Ultra in February, and Tyler released Goblin through XL Recordings in May, which debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. The video for “Yonkers” spread online, making Odd Future a focus of music blogs. Tyler then won MTV’s Best New Artist award. In April 2011, the collective signed a distribution deal with RED Distribution, backed by Sony Music Entertainment, and created Odd Future Records.

In 2012, The OF Tape Vol. 2 became the collective’s only studio album. The same year, Loiter Squad premiered on Adult Swim, while Frank Ocean released Channel Orange. Critics compared Odd Future’s structure to that of the Wu-Tang Clan, and A$AP Mob followed a similar collective model. By 2015, solo careers had taken priority. Tyler’s Twitter post was read as an end signal, with the last joint shows in 2016 and a later confirmation in “OKRA” in 2018.

Meaning and History

ODD Future Logo History

The studio and group logos have remained unchanged since their inception.

The Odd Future Records logo consists of only two letters and is the group’s official label. The abbreviation OF stands for Odd Future (Strange Future). In fact, the full name of the collective is much longer: OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). For the studio name, they kept only the first two letters.

What is Odd Future?

Odd Future is both a recording studio and the name of a rap group active in the United States from 2007 to 2016. The peak of popularity fell in 2010-2011. The studio was founded in 2011, when the comedy show also appeared, followed by a clothing line from the musicians.

The logo letters are designed as two donuts covered with pink icing. This is an unusual choice for a music group and studio. Several factors could have influenced this decision:

  • The young age of the musicians: when the group was formed, the members were teenagers.
  • Spontaneity: the logo reflects the group members’ love of desserts, which they may have enjoyed during rehearsals.
  • Humorous career: starting in 2011, when the label was created, some members of Odd Future became actors in a comedy TV series. Hence, the playful, animated elements are represented by donuts on the logo.

ODD Future Symbol

The pastry logo can be seen as an analogy, conveying the sweetness of creativity. In an alternative version of the logo, the icing drips from the dough, forming drops. The emblem symbolizes the hot atmosphere that arises on the stage where the collective performs and records albums.

Overall, the logo perfectly reflects the members’ eccentricity, their creative path, and the group’s name. Each vocalist recorded solo albums or collaborated with other members of the collective. Thus, even while Odd Future existed, the musicians remained independent stars with their own discographies. In 2015, Odd Future announced their “maturation” and ceased performing together, but occasionally met and attended musical events. In 2019, the group members stated that they were still together but would no longer tour. Thus, the donut-shaped logo is quite in line with the spirit of the group.

Font and Colors

ODD Future Emblem

The main colors of the label are yellow and pink, reflecting the youth of the group members:

  • Pink symbolizes dreams of fame, popularity, and a happy future. By creating the label, the musicians paved the way for their dreams to be realized. Thanks to the studio, talented guys from the ghetto managed to achieve success in the music world. The color hints that working with the studio is like receiving a sweet pastry as a gift.
  • Yellow embodies joy, a positive mood, and the movement that makes members call in their tracks.

The inscription is made with rounded letters, so modified that it is difficult to identify a specific font. The voluminous image gives the elements a plumpness reminiscent of dough.
