Plymouth is the largest city on the south coast of England and played a significant role in the history of British seafaring. In the 17th century, the Mayflower set sail from here, marking the beginning of the colonization of North America. For centuries, Plymouth has remained a major port deeply tied to the country’s military and trade history. Today, the city aims to enhance its reputation as a maritime hub and establish itself as a destination for investment and long-term residence.

The new development strategy required an updated visual language. Work on the identity was entrusted to the international agency DNCO. The designers sought to blend the symbolism of the maritime past with the city’s vision for the future.

The previous logo looked conservative: the serif font resembled standard tourist signage, suggesting a quiet, cozy place. For a modern city focused on growth and new economic sectors, that was insufficient. Plymouth is developing projects in autonomous shipping, renewable energy, medicine, and creative industries. These areas have the potential to create thousands of jobs and transform the local economy’s structure.

The new logo appears more industrial. The font is designed with large forms and slanted angles, creating an impression of strength and technological character. At the center of the identity is a symbol combining a compass, a map, and a lighthouse. The upper part of the sign resembles a sunrise over the horizon. It references Smeaton’s Tower, a historic lighthouse and a key landmark for sailors. The downward arrow points forward, suggesting a city that continues to move forward and open new opportunities.

The visual system is supplemented with graphics inspired by topographic maps and sea routes. Lines and contours on posters, signs, and city carriers evoke a sense of journey, exploration, and development. They link the identity to the past, when Plymouth was a starting point for maritime expeditions, and to the present, where it has become a platform for innovation.

The color palette is built around various shades of blue. They preserve the association with the sea and emphasize the city’s ongoing connection to the ocean. Additionally, modern accents have been introduced, making the system more flexible and versatile in its applications.
