Royal Air Maroc was formed on June 28, 1957, through the merger of Air Atlas and Air Maroc, shortly after Morocco gained independence from France in 1956. The new national carrier began with a small fleet of DC-3 and DC-4 aircraft. In 1998, Royal Air Maroc created Regional Air Lines for domestic and short international routes. In the early 2000s, it built Casablanca into a hub linking Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The airline marked its 50th anniversary in 2007. In 2011, it ordered five Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, becoming the first African airline to invest in the type, and received its first 787 in 2015. In 2018, it announced plans to join Oneworld, entering the alliance on April 1, 2020, as its first African member.
