SCREEN Graphic Solutions traces its origins to 1868, when Akira Ishida founded a copper and lithographic printing workshop in Kyoto called Ishida Kyokuzan Printing Works. In 1934, the company produced Japan’s first glass halftone screens for photographic reproduction. On October 11, 1943, Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was officially established, continuing the family’s printing technology business.
After World War II, the company expanded into photographic equipment and printing technologies. In 1964, it introduced Auto Graver, an electronic engraving machine that automated parts of commercial printing production. International expansion began in 1967 with the creation of SCREEN USA, followed by growth in European markets. The SG-701 color scanner, launched in 1973, became one of the company’s major commercial successes.
During the 1990s, Dainippon Screen entered digital publishing and developed Computer-to-Plate technology. In 1995, Dainippon introduced the PlateRite 1080 CtP recorder, allowing digital files to be transferred directly to printing plates. By 2012, more than 17,500 Screen thermal CtP systems had been installed worldwide, competing with products from companies such as Agfa Prepress and Kodak Graphic Communications.
The company expanded into digital printing with the Truepress series in 1998 and acquired Inca Digital Printers in 2005. On August 5, 2014, Dainippon Screen became SCREEN Holdings, while the printing equipment division was renamed SCREEN Graphic Solutions. Later products included the Truepress Jet L350UV label printer and JetInspection quality control system.
