Infrastructure and building construction involve designing, building, and managing facilities in urban environments. Roads, bridges, and residential complexes shape the spaces where people live and work. The Skanska logo is associated with a Swedish construction company active in infrastructure and real estate.
Rudolf Fredrik Berg founded Skanska in 1887 in Malmö. The company was originally named Aktiebolaget Skånska Cementgjuteriet. Initially, the company specialized in producing cement products. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had entered construction and become a leader in Sweden’s infrastructure development. In 1902, the company entered the international market and opened a plant in Saint Petersburg.
In 1965, the company was listed on the stock exchange. In 1971, it began operations in the United States. By 1984, Skanska had adopted its modern name and had become a global construction corporation. In 1979, the company built the Pribaltiyskaya Hotel in Leningrad. Later, it helped construct the World Trade Center in New York.
In the 1990s, the company doubled its revenues and strengthened its international presence. In Russia, from 1994 to 2011, the company built residential complexes, shopping centers, and sports facilities. One of these was Arena 2000 in Yaroslavl. In 2004, Skanska acquired the German company Walter Bau for 4 billion Swedish kronor. This deal reinforced the company’s position in Europe.
Since the 2010s, Skanska has been developing renewable energy projects. In 2014, the company received a contract to build Australia’s largest solar complex. During the same period, it helped build wind farms in the United States and Canada.
In 2017, Skanska acquired the American company Flatiron Construction, thereby expanding its infrastructure construction segment. In 2021, Skanska completed construction of the BLOX cultural center in Copenhagen. In 2023, the company completed construction of a railway hub in Stockholm at a cost of about 500 million euros.
In 2024, the company completed the construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand. The project used modern technologies to improve energy efficiency.
The order volume reached 227 billion Swedish kronor. Operating profit increased by 9 percent. Despite revenue declines in some regions, the company remains one of the world’s largest construction groups. It continues to develop green energy and to digitalize construction processes.
Meaning and History
What is Skanska?
A Swedish construction and development corporation based in Solna, it began as a cement producer and has become one of the world’s largest contractors. It employs about 55,000 people and generates more than 13 billion euros in revenue. The company builds industrial and civil facilities, residential complexes, offices, shopping centers, and infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, roads, railways, and power stations. It develops commercial real estate for sale and lease and implements infrastructure projects in partnership with the government.
1984 – 1999
The short name Skanska came from the longer Swedish name Aktiebolaget Skånska Cementgjuteriet. “Skånska” means “Scanian,” referring to the province of Skåne in southern Sweden. “Cementgjuteriet” referred to the production of concrete castings. Rudolf Fredrik Berg founded the business in Malmö in 1887. Concrete products provided its starting point, followed by construction work. The group later expanded into building construction, infrastructure, and property development.
As the company expanded beyond Sweden, it began presenting itself to international clients as Skanska. The shortened form had been used for decades before becoming the official name in 1984. It dropped the ring above the Swedish “å” while preserving the reference to Skåne. The name change reflected the group’s expansion from a domestic contractor into an international construction company.
The early Skanska logo combined black lettering with a yellow-and-black emblem on the left. An elongated hexagon with sharp corners was divided horizontally into two halves. The upper half was yellow with a thin black outline, while the lower half was solid black. Large sans-serif capitals spelled SKANSKA to the right. The strokes were heavy, and the letters were closely spaced. The “S” had angular turns and angled cuts at its ends, while the openings in the “A” letters were triangular. The design replaced the full Swedish name with a shorter international name.
1999 – 2021
By 2000, Skanska’s clients increasingly needed a construction partner for projects spanning several countries. At the time, the group’s local operations used different versions of its identity. To unite its international divisions, Skanska developed a shared logo with Brindfors Enterprise IG. The new identity presented the company as a single organization with a shared network of expertise. It was introduced across the divisions in stages.
The yellow-and-black hexagon was removed. A dark blue SKANSKA wordmark in large sans-serif capitals replaced the separate emblem. The lettering kept its broad strokes and tight spacing, but its contours softened. The “S” curves gained rounded transitions, and some junctions between vertical and diagonal strokes were smoothed. The strokes remained similar in thickness, while neighboring “K” and “A” letters formed an almost continuous line along the baseline. The custom lettering allowed the name to serve as the complete logo for the group’s divisions.
2021 – today
Skanska’s updated logo retained a single word in blue capitals. The most apparent difference from the previous version was the shade: a lighter, brighter blue replaced the dark blue. The SKANSKA letterforms also changed. The letters became taller, with more space between them. Straight cuts finished the ends of the “S,” stroke junctions became more angular, and the lower sections had fewer rounded corners. Designer Martin Andersson linked the changes in proportion and color to the logo’s use in digital environments.
The idea of “Shaping” connected the update to the company’s construction work. It referred to shaping places for people to live through buildings and architecture. A system of geometric forms developed around the wordmark, recalling openings and cutouts in structures. The identity also introduced Skanska Shape Sans in several weights. Göran Söderström of Letters from Sweden designed the typography.
NORD ID and NORD DDB Stockholm began the project by studying clients’ needs. Skanska needed to align its identity with its business growth and the brand’s use across digital media. The team included Creative Director Linnea Lofjord, designers Martin Andersson and Katarina Strejler, and other specialists from both studios. The team presented the new identity to employees in late 2021. Its rollout across Skanska’s markets began in 2022. That same year, the project received a Red Dot award in the Corporate Design category.
