Berry Global: Brand overview

Berry Global was founded in 1967 by Paul Berry in Evansville, Indiana. The company was originally called Imperial Plastics. It began by producing polyethylene trash bags and gradually shifted to manufacturing packaging materials for businesses. In 1983, the company was renamed Berry Plastics Corporation. This reflected the expansion of its product range to include containers, lids, and films.

Since the late 1980s, Berry has been on a series of acquisitions, consolidating small plastic packaging manufacturers. In the 1990s, the company expanded its production capacity and geographic presence across the United States. In 2006, control of Berry Plastics passed to the Apollo Global Management fund for $ 2.3 billion. In 2007, the company acquired Captive Plastics, strengthening its position in the medical sector.

In 2010, Berry purchased Pliant Corporation for $ 580 million. In 2012, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BERY and was valued at about $ 4 billion. In 2013, it completed the acquisition of Avintiv for $ 1.45 billion. In 2014, the company bought AEP Industries for $ 765 million.

In 2017, the company changed its name to Berry Global Group. That same year, it acquired Clopay Plastic Products for $ 475 million, strengthening its nonwoven materials division. In 2019, the company made its largest deal to date: Berry Global acquired the British RPC Group for $ 6.5 billion, significantly strengthening its position in the European market.

In 2020, the company increased production of medical packaging and protective equipment. In 2021 and 2022, Berry invested in digitalization and the development of lightweight materials to reduce raw material consumption. In 2023, the company expanded its presence in the Asian market. before 2017

Berry Plastics Logo before 2017

Before 2017, the Berry Plastics logo was built around custom lettering for the company name. The word BERRY consisted of blue horizontal stripes separated by white spaces. This treatment formed the letters through alternating lines. It made them resemble layers of plastic, the material used to manufacture the company’s products.

The company’s history began in Evansville, Indiana, in 1967. Paul Berry opened a small business called Imperial Plastics. Eleven years later, it became Berry Plastics Corporation. The new name came from the founder’s last name, so BERRY remained the main element of the company’s identity for almost 40 years.

Five large letters occupied the upper section of the logo. They consisted of horizontal blue stripes of equal thickness separated by white spaces. The treatment made the letters resemble closed window blinds while keeping the name easy to read.

A thin blue line ran beneath BERRY. It connected with the first and last letters and separated the name from the lower line. The word PLASTICS appeared below in uppercase letters with smooth terminals. Its smaller size kept the main emphasis on the company name. Blue was used throughout the logo and united both parts of the identity.

2017 – today

Berry Global Logo

The renaming of Berry Plastics as Berry Global Group formed part of a corporate update following the acquisition of AEP Industries and other assets. The former name covered a limited range of business areas. In addition to plastic products, the group manufactured packaging, fiber-based materials, protective coatings, medical products, construction materials, and consumer goods.

The new brand was announced on April 3, 2017. The name Berry Global Group took effect on April 13. CEO Tom Salmon connected the addition of “Global” with the business’s international scale. At the time, the group operated more than 130 manufacturing facilities in different countries.

The international agency Siegel+Gale handled the brand update. A separate emblem appeared with the Berry Global name. The previous logo had been based on the Berry Plastics wordmark. The 2017 version represented the entire group and covered its different materials and product categories.

The emblem consists of four curved triangular sections. Their points meet in the center and form a diamond-shaped outer contour. The upper left section is yellow-green, the upper right is light gray, the lower left is light blue, and the lower right is red-orange. Flowing connections create a unified enclosed form with a continuous structure. It represents connections among the group’s divisions, facilities, and business areas.

The four sections represent Partnership, Excellence, Growth, and Safety. The emblem became the company’s shared identifier following a series of acquisitions and the expansion of its international network.

The name Berry appears to the left of the colored figure. The first letter is uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The blue typeface has smooth terminals and resembles Avenir Next and Segoe UI. A white curved cut appears in the lower section of the letter “B,” giving the wordmark a custom feature that distinguishes it from other type treatments. The colored figure sits on the right, slightly above the line of text, making the name and emblem appear as two connected parts of the logo.
