Apollo Global Management was founded in 1990 by former Drexel Burnham Lambert executives Mark Rowan, Josh Harris, and Leon Black, with an initial capital of $400 million. Initially, Apollo specialized in distressed investments and successfully navigated the early-1990s recession.

In 1995, Apollo expanded into real estate, which soon became a key component of its portfolio. By the late 1990s, the company oversaw more than $20 billion in assets, notably acquiring prominent businesses such as the Spanish-language network Telemundo and the ski operator Vail Resorts.

The firm diversified further in 2001 by launching a lending division. In 2004, Apollo Investment Corporation debuted as a publicly traded subsidiary, targeting mid-sized companies. The 2008 financial crisis enabled Apollo to effectively capitalize on undervalued assets, thereby enhancing its market presence.

Apollo’s public listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2011 facilitated greater investment opportunities. Between 2012 and 2015, the firm acquired significant businesses, including entertainment brand Chuck E. Cheese and McGraw-Hill Education. Asset management reached $280 billion by 2018, as Apollo expanded into insurance and private credit markets.

Following Leon Black’s resignation in 2021, Mark Rowan, co-founder, became CEO. What is Apollo?

This is one of the largest companies in alternative investment management, working with real estate, credit, and private equity. It involves asset acquisitions, restructuring distressed businesses, and investing across various industries. Its investment approach is based on detailed market analysis and flexible strategies, allowing it to identify promising opportunities. The company manages capital for private investors, insurance organizations, pension and sovereign funds, and other major financial institutions, with an extensive network of offices worldwide.

1990 – 2018

The Apollo identity was first introduced in the early 1990s. It was intended to establish the image of an institution associated with tradition and capital-based values grounded in stability. The visual concept was based on symmetry and architectural allusions, emphasizing academic character and stability.

The form of the composition resembled a rectangular block outlined by a double frame. The outer part was colored in a green-gray tone close to dusty emerald. A white stripe inside set the inner contour, followed by another section of the same green color on which the text was placed. The effect resembled a classical plaque or stone tablet, reinforcing the reference to ancient culture.

The word “APOLLO” was placed in the center. All letters were uppercase, colored white, and executed in an antique style. The serifs were thin and refined with smooth curves. The letter spacing was expanded, and the composition appeared static and reserved. The letterforms demonstrated the influence of Trajan or a reworked version of Garamond. They had elongated proportions, elegant verticals, and balanced stroke contrast. The symbols varied in width. The letter “O” was almost circular, “A” slightly taller than the others, and the letter “L” slightly narrower. The plasticity gave the text a monumental character.

The palette was based on the combination of white and dark green. The white letters and frame created contrast with the muted background, producing a restrained and formal impression.

2018 – today

The change of the Apollo mark was connected with the task of updating the company’s image while maintaining continuity with the previous visual tradition. The project was carried out by the agency Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv, which proposed a concept abandoning the framed composition used in the previous version. The visual focus shifted to a pure wordmark, freeing the logo from decorative surroundings and making it more versatile in use.

The logo’s structure was simplified by arranging the name “APOLLO” on a single line. The letters were evenly distributed horizontally, all symbols of equal height. Compared to the 1990–2018 version, the text appeared larger and freer due to the increased proportions and absence of the frame.

The typographic foundation retained the classical antique style. A modified Garamond font is used with thin serifs and refined stroke contrast. The academic quality of the inscription is achieved through the typeface’s plasticity, while a slight adjustment in proportions ensures a modern aesthetic.

The palette is based on dark green, applied to the entire text. The shade became slightly richer than in the old logo, which increased visual impact.

The updated identity preserves continuity: the antique style remains, but the composition has become simpler and more concise. The green wordmark symbolizes maturity and seriousness.
