St John’s College in Cambridge has unveiled a new visual style created by the agency SomeOne. Founded by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, the college boasts a history spanning over five centuries and is among the most respected educational institutions in England. Its architectural ensemble is considered one of the symbols of Cambridge, and its alumni include Nobel laureates, archbishops, and distinguished figures in science and culture.
The old college crest was filled with heraldic imagery. An eagle holding a shield, mythical creatures, a royal crown, and numerous secondary elements conveyed the complexity of the composition. The abundance of details reflected tradition, but in the digital environment, the crest became difficult to read and lost clarity when scaled down.
SomeOne was tasked with preserving the historical foundation while adapting the symbolism to modern conditions. Illustrator Anthony Millard, a heraldry specialist, participated in the work. He reworked the composition, removing unnecessary details and reducing the palette to black and white. The crest became graphically stronger while retaining its solemnity and status.
An abbreviation, “SJC,” accompanied by a reduced version of the crest, was added. The idea for the abbreviation originated from the layout of the college’s Second Court, where academic and cultural events are held. The monogram, based on architectural proportions, became a symbol of continuity, allowing for the creation of a system of visual modules for various formats.
The typography is based on GT Ultra by Grilli Type. Its style was inspired by historic inscriptions on the college’s walls, engravings, and marks on antique objects.
The new visual language emphasizes the concept of a “home of big ideas.” The college positions itself as a place where scientific and cultural directions are formed that change the global context. This idea is evident throughout, from the architectural references in the monogram to the type system and grid, which utilize the campus layout as its foundation.
The updated style demonstrates a balance between respect for the past and readiness for the future. St John’s College now has a visual system that can function in both academic and public contexts. The new crest, monogram, and typography reflect the institution’s prestige and make its symbolism relevant for students, alumni, and the wider public.
