The best herbal ingredients are used to make beer. The Staropramen logo indicates the drink’s popularity and consistently high quality, which has won numerous prestigious awards.
Staropramen: Brand overview
Staropramen began in Smíchov, Prague, where a joint-stock company for building a brewery was founded on September 6, 1869. The plan had been approved on April 21, 1868, by Czech entrepreneurs who wanted the project to use Czech capital, Czech workers, and local contractors. Brewing started on May 1, 1871, and sales began on July 15 under the name Smíchovský pivovar.
By 1891, annual output had reached 140,200 hectoliters. In 1911, facing competition from other Czech breweries, including Pilsner Urquell, the company registered the Staropramen trademark. The name means “old spring” in Czech and refers to a natural spring near the brewery. The official renaming followed in 1913.
World War I disrupted raw material supplies and reduced production, but the brewery recovered in the 1920s. In the 1930s, Staropramen became the largest brewery in Czechoslovakia, producing 859,561 hectoliters in 1939. After World War II, it was nationalized in 1946. Exports began in 1953, and by the 1960s, annual output had passed 1 million hectoliters.
After 1989, Staropramen moved through several ownership changes. In 1992, Pražské pivovary united Staropramen with Braník. Bass took control in 1996, Ostravar joined in 1997, Interbrew acquired the assets in 2000, and InBev appeared after the 2004 merger with AmBev. In 2009, CVC Capital Partners acquired Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Central European assets and formed StarBev. In 2012, Molson Coors acquired StarBev, bringing Staropramen into its portfolio.
Meaning and History
The foundation of the well-known Czech company was the Joint Stock Brewery in Smíchov. It was in one of the Prague districts. To expand production, management began a large-scale construction of a factory, which introduced new products in 1871. Later, two more breweries joined Staropramen. These are Ostravar Brewery (launched in 1898) and Braník (opened in 1900). This measure allowed them to avoid competition, since the Czech Republic has long been one of the most important brewing regions, with many specialized firms.
After the end of the First World War, the company entered a stage of active growth, so by the end of 1930, it had become the largest in the country. When the Second World War ended, the brewery was nationalized, but after the fall of the socialist regime, the plant entered the Pražské Pivovary group along with Braník and Měšťan. This was in 1992.
What is Staropramen?
Staropramen is a Czech brewing company and its flagship brand. It has existed since 1869, specializing in drinks with an alcohol content of 4-5.2 percent. The company is one of the top 3 largest breweries in the Czech Republic and supplies products to 37 countries worldwide. Since 2012, it has been a subsidiary of Molson Coors Corporation.
The Staropramen brewery passed from one owner to another for a long time until it was owned by Molson Coors. She bought it in the spring of 2012. All this time, the Czech brand has demonstrated sustainable development by expanding its product range. Gradually, the brand acquired an individual logo, which became the first and only one in its history. Graphic artist František Tichý drew it.
Thanks to a successful identity, Staropramen beer is well recognizable in all corners of the world. The logo on its label conveys the manufacturer’s strong attachment to its historical heritage. It reflects the Czech company’s commitment to the old recipe, which, like the emblem, it does not intend to change.
The core of the visual identity is the name, set in a handwritten style without italics. The symbols are strictly vertical, although the word is angled. The bottom diagonal goes down and underlines the text: it starts at “n” and ends at the first letter. At the same time, “S” and “t” are united by a common coil, smoothly turning into a crossbar. All signs are painted emerald green and complemented by a golden shadow that makes the brand name a three-dimensional object.
Below is the city where the brewing company was founded. The red inscription is decorated with elongated rhombuses on the right and left. At the top is an impromptu coat of arms. This is a brand symbol whose central element is a curly “S” in the old English style – with pointed protrusions and forked ends. On the sides of it are barley ears and a wreath of hops – the key ingredients of Czech beer. There are two capital letters in the intra-alphabetic space: “A” and “S.” The year of the company’s opening is marked on the red ribbon below.
Font and Colors
The inscription in the Staropramen logo is not set in a standard typeface but in a custom graphic font. Signs are connected, handwritten, rounded, grotesque, and close to the Streetwear font. The corporate palette includes two colors: emerald green and gold, reminiscent of the color of ears and beer.
