Superformance: Brand overview

The company Superformance was created in 1994 in Johannesburg, South Africa, by Jimmy Price, a motorsport enthusiast and businessman from South Africa. The company’s original objective was to build excellent copies of vintage sports cars, especially the fabled Shelby Cobra.

The brand debuted its first model, a Shelby Cobra Mk III replica in 1995. This model was painstakingly created using contemporary materials and technologies to faithfully recreate the original Cobra 427, maintaining the vehicle’s timeless appearance and driving experience.

The original Cobra’s designer, Carroll Shelby, formally endorsed the company in 1996. This was an important turning point for the business, confirming the caliber and legitimacy of their imitations. Shelby was so taken with the work that he decided to cooperate with the company, which resulted in the production of Cobra reproductions that were granted official licenses.

The brand added copies of additional vintage sports vehicles to their range by the late 1990s. They debuted a 1999 reproduction of the Ford GT40, the iconic 1960s racing vehicle. This model received a lot of appreciation for its fine craftsmanship and exact recreation.

Beginning in the early 2000s, the company kept expanding its model line. 2003, the business debuted the Superformance Coupe, modeled after the Shelby Daytona Coupe. Compared to the original, this car offered better performance and comfort by fusing traditional styling with contemporary technology.

2005 was significant for the brand as the business increased its market share abroad, particularly in the US. Once they established an office in California, they served one of their main markets more effectively.

The brand introduced the GT40 Mk II, an upgraded version of their GT40 replica, in 2007. Safir GT40 Spares, the “GT40” trademark owner, approved this model because it was even more similar to the original racing car.

The Superformance MKIII-R, a contemporary take on the iconic Cobra, was released in 2010. This car provided a more comfortable daily driving experience by fusing traditional design with contemporary technology and enhanced ergonomics.

The company added the Superformance Corvette Grand Sport, a recreation of the venerable 1963 race car, to its inventory in 2012. This vehicle was officially licensed after being created in partnership with General Motors.

The GT40 Mk II 50th Anniversary Edition, produced to mark the 50th anniversary of Ford’s historic triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, made 2015 stand out in terms of performance. The limited edition was well-received by fans and collectors.

Throughout the ensuing years, the brand added new materials and technology to its models while paying tribute to the vintage aesthetics and spirit of the original vehicles.

2018, Ford Performance and Shelby American began collaborating to produce an officially licensed duplicate of the 2019 Ford GT40 MKII.

The company has established itself as a top producer of accurate and well-made reproductions of vintage sports vehicles. This reputation for quality and authenticity has won over collectors and fans worldwide.

The Superformance emblem consists of two parts that harmoniously coexist in a unified space. They are different but complement each other well, containing elements of various types.

  1. A vertical red rectangle with two white diagonal stripes reminiscent of a road sign.
  2. The name is in a font with letters elongated upwards. These elegant letters hint at the creative process.

Since the company offers licensed replicas, it cannot make any design changes, which is reflected in its logo. This signifies that certain boundaries must be respected to comply with agreements, as its primary range includes iconic sports cars from the 1960s. This has influenced its visual identity, making the emblem appear restrained yet exclusive.

The white stripes are medium-width and stretch from the top right corner to the bottom left, resembling a road sign. With a bright red background, they stand out effectively and are visible from a distance. The black text contrasts sharply with the background. It is rendered in lowercase in an elegant font.

The letters are elongated and elegant, with smoothly rounded corners and polished edges. This typography shows that the manufacturer pays meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that all aspects are considered and that the style is maintained. This dedication ensures that modern recreations of retro cars fully match the originals. The company specializes in high-quality replicas.
