The Australian Women’s National Basketball League has added a new team. The Tasmania Jewels have been introduced as the ninth club in the competition and will begin play in the 2026 27 WNBL season. The team’s arrival marks a new chapter for women’s basketball in the country and in Tasmania.
The Tasmania Jewels enter the league with a distinctive brand inspired by the state’s natural environment and the island’s basketball heritage. The emblem combines the Tasmanian devil image with a gemstone motif, conveying the team’s competitive spirit and ambition for high performance.
WNBL Chief Executive Officer Jennie Sager noted that the introduction of the Tasmania Jewels reflects growing interest in women’s basketball and creates new opportunities for athletes and fans. She emphasized that the club expands the pathway into professional sport for young girls seeking to develop at a high level.
With the arrival of the Tasmania Jewels, Tasmania’s sporting scene receives an additional boost. The team joins the JackJumpers and strengthens basketball’s presence in the region, creating new opportunities for players, coaches, and sports professionals across the state.
Tasmania Jewels Chief Executive Officer Christine Finnegan said the team’s brand conveys Tasmania’s natural beauty and the spirit of the local community. According to her, the state has developed a strong sporting identity recognized beyond Australia.
With the introduction of the Jewels, the WNBL begins preparations for the club’s debut season, expecting the Tasmania team to take a prominent place within the structure of Australian women’s sport.
