2001 – 2008
The Teck Cominco brand appeared in July 2001 following the merger of Teck Corporation and Cominco. The logo retained both names from the transaction, so the new identity represented the union of two mining companies.
The history of Teck Resources traces back to Teck-Hughes Gold Mines Limited. The company was established in 1913 to develop the Teck-Hughes gold deposit near Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Teck Corporation and the later Teck corporate line originated from the early mine and the Teck-Hughes name.
Following the merger with Cominco in 2001, the group operated as Teck Cominco Limited. The logo used until 2008 represented a transitional period. Teck and Cominco remained together in one name, and the entire identity relied on the wordmark.
The word teckcominco appeared as a single word in lowercase letters. The first four letters, “teck,” used a dark blue-purple color and heavier strokes. The “cominco” section was gray and used a lighter weight. The differences in weight and color made the two names readable as separate parts even though they appeared on one line.
The sans-serif typeface had straight vertical strokes and resembled Helvetica, Arial, or Univers. The logo served as a professional wordmark for the combined mining group. Teck received stronger visual emphasis, while Cominco remained in the name as the second part of the 2001 corporate merger.
2008 – today
On October 1, 2008, Teck Cominco introduced the Teck brand. Cominco was removed from the name, and the company adopted a shorter form suited to its various mining operations. In a release issued the same day, the group presented the Teck brand and five business areas: copper, metallurgical coal, zinc, gold, and energy.
The Teck Resources name came into use on October 1, 2008, while the company usually presented itself as Teck in its communications. The legal name changed to Teck Resources Limited in 2009.
The Teck wordmark appears in black. The first letter is uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The bold sans-serif typeface uses upright letterforms. Its appearance resembles a modified Helvetica Bold or typefaces such as Arial Black.
The primary emphasis falls on the letter “T.” Its upper crossbar extends to the right and runs above part of the word. The first letter became the main visual motif of the logo.
