The Tempur-Pedic logo has become a symbol of comfort born from scientific innovation. A technology originally designed to protect astronauts became the foundation for products that provide a new level of comfort and support. This product found its place in everyday life and the medical field, combining practicality and a focus on comfort.

Tempur-Pedic: Brand overview

Tempur-Pedic traces its origins to the early 1970s, when NASA developed a viscoelastic material for spacecraft seat cushions. In 1980, Swedish company Fagerdala World Foams began adapting the technology for commercial use. After nearly ten years of research, it introduced TEMPUR in 1989 and started producing medical pillows and mattresses in Sweden.

The brand entered the United States in 1991 after businessman Bob Trotta discovered the products in Sweden and founded Tempur-Pedic Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky. Early sales came through chiropractors and medical retailers. From 1992 to 1995, marketing focused on the material’s pressure absorption, including the well-known wine-glass demonstration.

Retail distribution expanded in 1996, and a large Danish factory opened in 1998 for the European market. Tempur-Pedic listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2003, then added a manufacturing plant in Albuquerque in 2007. In 2012, it acquired Sealy for $1.3 billion and adopted the Tempur Sealy International name.

From 2013 to 2015, the combined business integrated production and introduced mattresses using technologies from both companies. Sales declined in 2016 after a break with Mattress Firm, but the partnership resumed in 2019 under revised terms. From 2020 to 2022, the company expanded online sales, production capacity, and product development. By 2023, its manufacturing network covered several international markets and supported a broader mattress and sleep-products business.
