Uniroyal, formerly the United States Rubber Company, made significant contributions to the global tire industry between 1916 and 1990. Founded in New Jersey in 1892, the company adopted the Uniroyal brand name in 1961.
Uniroyal’s extensive product line included tires for various vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, agricultural equipment, and aircraft. The company’s manufacturing facilities were scattered throughout North America and Europe and supported many tire brands such as Tiger Paw, Royal Seal, Rainier, and the famous giant Uniroyal Tire introduced at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.
The company was a beacon of innovation in the industry, developing several technologies, including polyester cord tires, tubeless tires, bias belt tires, and white wall relief tires. In addition to tire manufacturing, Uniroyal was involved in the chemical industry, establishing a subsidiary, Uniroyal Chemical, which produced Naugahyde for upholstery materials, adhesives, and chemicals needed for tire manufacturing.
Uniroyal maintained close ties with auto racing teams for many years, promoting its high-performance tires. However, by the 1980s, the French tire company Michelin took over the company. In the early 1990s, the Uniroyal brand was finally discontinued, and Michelin took over its production facilities.
During its heyday, Uniroyal had about 60 plants and more than 80,000 employees in the United States and Europe. Although the company ceased to exist, the Uniroyal brand has maintained its legacy due to its long and influential history in tire manufacturing.
