The United Soccer League logo reflects the concept of a soccer community uniting clubs nationwide. Here, the game itself matters most; without big names, it focuses on gradual development and genuine interest in sports.

United Soccer League Logo: Brand overview

The history of the United Soccer League began in 1985 when entrepreneur Francisco Marcos founded the Southwest Indoor Soccer League to promote soccer in the US after the collapse of the NASL. The early seasons were held indoors with just five teams. The league soon expanded outdoors and was renamed the Sunbelt Independent Soccer League.

In 1997, a merger with the American Professional Soccer League created the USL A-League. Later, additional divisions and youth leagues emerged, such as the Super Y-League and Super-20 League.

A significant milestone was the 2013 partnership with MLS, which enabled MLS clubs to create affiliate teams in the USL. In 2017, USL was granted second-division status by the US Soccer Federation. In 2019, USL launched its third professional league, USL League One.

In 2024, the USL Super League, a women’s first-division league, began. Starting in 2027, the league plans a men’s first division with promotion and relegation. Today, USL includes over 200 clubs, making it the largest soccer organization in North America.

The United Soccer League is the governing body for several soccer leagues in the United States, including the USL Championship, USL League One, and USL League Two.

In 2011, the USL introduced a vibrant sports-focused logo. The acronym “USL” was bright green, referencing soccer fields and lively play. The second word, “PRO,” appeared in blue, symbolizing organizational stability.

A soccer ball replaced the letter “O,” emphasizing league professionalism. Yellow-orange lines behind the letters symbolized ball movement and game speed.

Below, the phrase “Men’s Professional Soccer” appears in italics, in a sans-serif typeface similar to Agency FB Bold Italic. The main letters featured a bold, italic sans-serif font, resembling Impact Italic or Eurostile Bold Oblique, which enhanced a sense of speed.

United Soccer League Logo

The updated image of the United Soccer League is centered on prestige and professionalism. These qualities are conveyed through the use of new forms in the design and the introduction of new, so-called “solid” colors. The visual redesign was created by the studio Good Omen Partners.

The logo is based on a large “USL” wordmark set in a strict geometric typeface. The letters are heavy, massive, and black. The composition is completed by a square of bronze containing a white five-pointed star. This serves as a visual marker of championship status and a sign of the league’s high level of competition.

The bottom of the logo features the word “Championship”. The lettering is set in a thin, rounded white typeface, similar in style to well-known fonts such as Gotham Rounded or Helvetica Neue. The background is rendered in an ochre-gold shade, reinforcing the design’s premium character.

The logo’s structure is based on a horizontal division, with the upper light gray section contrasting with the lower ochre section. The logo appears strict and prestigious, harmoniously emphasizing the tournament’s importance within the United States’ sports hierarchy.
