Zenith: Brand overview

Zenith was founded in Le Locle in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. He began with precision pocket watches and later created one of Switzerland’s early vertically integrated manufactures, bringing design, movement production and assembly under one roof. A prize-winning pocket watch appeared in 1896, and the company adopted the Zenith name in 1911.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the firm expanded wristwatch production and developed new calibres. Military models followed during World War II. The 5011K movement arrived in 1960 and earned chronometry awards. In 1969, Zenith introduced El Primero, an automatic chronograph running at 36,000 vibrations per hour and able to measure tenths of a second.

The quartz crisis brought a takeover by Zenith Radio Corporation in 1971 and a shift toward electronic watches. Watchmaker Charles Vermot secretly preserved El Primero tools and drawings, allowing production to resume after Swiss investors bought the company in 1978. During the 1980s and 1990s, the calibre returned in Zenith models and powered the Daytona made by Rolex.

LVMH acquired the company in 1999. Later releases included El Primero Striking 10th, Grande Class Traveler Multicity and anniversary editions in 2010. Academy Georges Favre-Jacot marked 150 years in 2015. By 2023, Chronomaster, Defy and Pilot remained central collections, supported by high-frequency mechanical movements, tourbillons and continued development of El Primero for international markets.

Zenith Old Logo

The first Zenith logo featured a bold black inscription of the brand name placed on a heraldic shield. The powerful, heavy letters symbolized reliability and stability, reflecting the company’s full vertical integration, as it produced all the components for its watches in-house, ensuring quality. The font style conveyed precision and strength, while the emblem emphasized the brand’s worldwide popularity and recognition.

The brand name was chosen from astronomical terms, as astronomy is directly related to measuring time. Zenith is the Sun’s highest point in the sky, always coinciding with noon. This number symbolizes the start of a new time cycle and is a key reference point for watches. Zenith represents the pursuit of ultimate perfection, excellence, and leadership.

A star is highlighted at the top of the shield, symbolizing this highest point and standing out among other stars. At the bottom of the emblem, part of a watch dial is visible, featuring a rising sun and the year the brand was founded, 1865.

The shield is adorned with a royal crown, with feathers or leaves cascading down the sides, alluding to the product’s royal quality. This element highlights that rulers, who associated the brand with exclusivity and the highest quality, wore Zenith’s creations.

Zenith Logo

The modern Zenith logo has become more refined and dynamic, thanks to the combination of thin and bold letters. The inscription appears to be a symbol of moving forward, reflecting the company’s continuous development over the decades. The emblem also highlights the brand’s global presence and reach.

At the logo’s center is a single key star, serving as a guiding symbol that references astronomy. The star’s placement at the zenith and at noon on the dial reinforces the company’s image as an industry leader constantly striving for perfection. Unnecessary elements have been removed, giving the visual symbol a minimalist, focused appearance and emphasizing the brand’s core qualities.

Below the name, an inscription points to the company’s Swiss origin and the year it was founded. This enhances the sense of tradition, expertise, and undeniable quality of Swiss watches, underscoring the prestige and craftsmanship of the Zenith brand.
