Altek began on February 24, 1976, when engineers Allan Marzetta and Leo Kauppila founded K&M Engineering & Tool in a family garage. The partners produced injection-molded plastic parts and molds as the US plastics industry was still developing. Kauppila left in 1980, and Marzetta renamed the business Altek Machining & Molds.
Growth led to several larger facilities, culminating in a 145,000-square-foot complex in Liberty Lake, Washington, in 1997. Allan Marzetta designed each new plant as orders grew. The site combined 28 CNC machines, 36 molding presses, toolmaking, painting, printing, assembly, and testing, allowing Altek to manage projects from design through finished production.
Aerospace became a major business through work on Boeing 737 interiors with Collins Aerospace, part of Raytheon Technologies. At one point, the sector generated about 55 percent of revenue. The 2019 suspension of the 737 MAX reduced orders by about 7 percent, but management retained roughly 200 employees and expanded medical and defense work.
Diversification later brought contracts with SpaceX for steel rods used in satellite deployment systems and work for Blue Origin. Altek also competed with regional manufacturer AccraFab and helped establish INWAC, later renamed NIMA, to connect aerospace suppliers in the Inland Northwest. The company remained family-owned under president Mike Marzetta, with several relatives involved in management. On February 24, 2026, Altek marked its 50th anniversary.
