Antifa emerged during the rise of fascism and is a counter-movement aimed at fighting it. The movement has an anti-racist and anti-fascist orientation, operates in the United States, and consists of many decentralized groups. It lacks a hierarchical leadership structure, so it is not an organization in the conventional sense of the word. Rather, it is a protest population made up of people with anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, anti-government, and anti-racist views. The movement periodically fades in and out and then flares up again. The most recent flurry of activity occurred in 2016 after Trump was elected president of the United States.
Meaning and History
Fascism, which emerged in the first half of the 20th century, automatically triggered anti-fascist sentiment. Isolated and organized groups formed the basis of a political movement first in Europe and then in America. In time, they were joined by anti-racists and anti-capitalists. Together they fight against fascism, neo-Nazi, and white supremacy.
This decentralized structure borrowed its name from the German Antifascist Commonwealth, which stands for an abbreviated form of the word “antifaschistisch,” and the Antifaschistische Aktion, an organization that existed from 1932-1933. At the same time, the name Antifa came to Germany from Italy: it is based on the term “anti-fascists.” The emblem of the movement is closely related to political actions: the flags depicted on it are borrowed from German demonstrators.
What is Antifa?
Antifa is an American protest political movement that includes anti-fascist, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist groups. It emerged during World War II and has its roots in fascist Italy and Germany. Its activism became prominent after the 2016 US presidential election when Donald John Trump won. At the same time, it is a decentralized structure with no leadership and little subordination. Its main task is to fight supporters of neo-Nazi, fascist, and white supremacist ideals. It is particularly popular in the Pacific Northwest and is centered in Portland, Oregon.
1920s – today
The emblem is a classic rondel: round with a focal point center and a wide band around the edge. The central position is occupied by two flags symbolizing anarchy (upper flag) and communism (lower flag). Therefore, one flag is wide and the other narrow, shaped like a hand scythe for cutting grass. They are painted in black and red colors, which stand out prominently against the white background, drawing attention to the idea of struggle. The background then transitions into an inner frame in some places: this effect is created by the contrasting palette, as it is followed by a wide black ring with the inscription “Anti-Fascist Action.”
The inscription uses a block font – bold, geometrically precise. As a result, the smooth letters appear very smooth, which gives the logo a seriousness. This style fits perfectly with the concept of protest, as it is categorical. The glyphs are uppercase legible, with sufficient spacing between the characters, so they are easy to read. The letter “A” stands out in particular: its sharp top has been cut off. The text is divided into two parts: one segment is in the upper part, the other in the lower part. Both parts have the shape of an arch.
Font and Colors
The logo uses a simple and clear font with a strict design reminiscent of Futura. After Trump’s election campaign, when he was elected President of the United States, the lettering was done in Gotham font or a similar variant: Nexa, Proxima Nova, Montserrat, etc.
The palette of the emblem of the anti-fascist political movement is radical. It includes contrasting colors that convey high emotional tension: black, white, and red.
