Apache: Brand overview
Apache emerged in 1995 as a successor to the NCSA HTTPd web server after Robert McCool ceased development of the original project. A new version was created by eight enthusiasts, combining patches to improve the old server. Hence, the name Apache is derived from “a patchy server.”
At the end of 1995, Apache HTTP Server version 1.0 was released, quickly establishing itself as a leader among web servers. In 1999, the developers founded the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), officially registered in Delaware, USA. ASF became the main platform for developing Apache and many other open-source projects.
In 2000, the Apache HTTP Server underwent a complete rewrite, adopting an architecture compatible with modern technologies and modules. In 2012, Apache 2.4 added high-load support, competing with Nginx.
In 2019, ASF moved all projects to GitHub. Today, the foundation supports over 320 projects, including Hadoop, Kafka, Spark, and Tomcat. The Apache HTTP Server remains among the most popular servers, accounting for over 17% of the global market share.

A non-profit organization supporting numerous open-source projects. It started with a web server that became one of the most popular globally. Today, it supports tools for data analysis, stream processing, and databases. The organization protects developers’ rights and ensures free use of its technologies. Major corporations widely use their projects, but these companies do not have a decisive influence.
1999 – 2016
The first official logo of the Apache Software Foundation was unveiled concurrently with the establishment of ASF as a nonprofit organization, legally formalizing the community that had previously emerged around the popular Apache HTTP Server.
The logo was designed by community member, programmer, and designer Kevin Walsh, who contributed to both Apache’s codebase and its visual identity. The vector feather symbol he designed remained unchanged throughout the logo’s use, reflecting the foundation’s approach of minimal interference with branding.
The emblem centers on a horizontally positioned feather, drawn with smooth lines, soft, rounded shapes, and a distinctive black central shaft. The feather’s coloration features a complex gradient that smoothly transitions from vivid reds and purples to saturated yellow, enhancing the impression of vibrancy and energy. The chosen color palette emphasized Apache’s creative and unconventional nature, symbolizing openness, transparency, and ease of interaction for developers with the project’s source code.
The feather symbol is a metaphor for documentation, transparency, and collaborative coding, although the foundation officially emphasized that there were no references to the Apache Native Americans. The name “Apache” itself originated from the playful term “a patchy server,” highlighting the modular structure of early versions of the Apache web server, which consisted of numerous patches and add-ons.
The logo’s typography is arranged in three lines, with a clear visual hierarchy. The top line features the auxiliary word “The,” rendered in small lowercase sans-serif letters. Below is the prominently displayed “Apache,” set in a bold uppercase sans-serif typeface, anchoring the composition visually. Beneath it, the phrase “Software Foundation” appears in a lighter but similarly sans-serif font, likely based on Helvetica or its equivalents. At the bottom is the foundation’s official URL, “http://www.apache.org,” set in a monospaced font resembling Courier or Courier New, visually highlighting the organization’s technological nature.
The typographic elements are presented exclusively in black, contrasting sharply with the colorful feather gradient, thereby creating a strict, professional appearance that balances the emblem’s emotional symbolism. The black text emphasized the foundation’s seriousness as a major center for software development and support.
Although the visual identity was updated in 2016, this original design continues to appear in the foundation’s retrospective materials and historical archives, representing a significant era in the Apache community’s evolution.
2016 – today
The new Apache Software Foundation logo was officially introduced on September 21, 2016. The primary goal of the redesign was to modernize ASF’s brand perception online and visually unify the numerous projects within the foundation’s ecosystem. The rebranding was carried out by Apache’s internal community with contributions from volunteers, notably designer Trevor Lucchi. The process took several months and included active discussions and refinement of design details by community members.
The logo’s design composition consists of two elements: a feather symbol on the left and the text “THE APACHE SOFTWARE FOUNDATION” on the right. The stylized feather is oriented vertically, with a smooth color gradient transitioning from deep purple through shades of red to vibrant orange. The feather shape is rendered with vector lines, gentle curves, and a smooth gradient, creating an impression of lightness and dynamism. The feather was chosen as a historic symbol of the Apache, emphasizing continuity with the foundation’s traditions, while also serving as a metaphor for writing, documentation, and transparency in open-source software development.
The text part of the logo is crafted using a custom typeface based on Open Sans, with adjustments to letter spacing and glyph proportions to achieve visual balance and rhythm. The word “THE” appears in a small, light gray, sans-serif font, vertically aligning the composition. The central word “APACHE” is rendered in uppercase in a deep burgundy-red (#D62828), with confident lines and slightly increased letter spacing to enhance readability.
