Nginx: Brand overview
The history of Nginx began in 2002 at Rambler. Engineer Igor Sysoev faced Apache’s limited capacity to handle a large number of connections and developed his own solution. The first Nginx release, in 2004, used an asynchronous architecture to efficiently handle thousands of connections with minimal resources.
In 2011, Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov founded Nginx, Inc., and launched Nginx Plus, a commercial version featuring load balancing, monitoring, and API management. The startup quickly attracted investment from major firms like Michael Dell’s fund and New Enterprise Associates.
In 2017, the company released Nginx Unit, a universal application server supporting multiple programming languages. Two years later, F5 Networks acquired Nginx for $670 million.
In late 2019, a legal dispute with Rambler over product rights was quickly settled. In 2022, founder Igor Sysoev left the project.
Today, Nginx remains one of the world’s most popular web servers, with continued development under F5 Networks’ ownership.

It is software developed by a Russian specialist to support web resources. The software handles thousands of simultaneous connections through its unique asynchronous architecture. Its tasks include delivering static files, balancing traffic, and defending against network threats. Instead of multiple threads, the server uses a fixed number of worker processes to distribute the workload efficiently.
2004 – today
The NGINX logo is a typographic composition built on custom lettering designed in the spirit of engineering precision and rational geometry. Its structure reflects the product’s philosophy: simplicity, efficiency, and performance. The visual mark consists of the word “NGINX” in uppercase, with each letter crafted in a unique form united by shared geometric principles.
The typeface is based on straight-line geometry with minimalist strokes and rounded terminals. Each letter has its shape: the “G” stands out, stylized as a hexagon with a notch that turns the form into a recognizable, almost symbolic mark, evoking a gear or a node. This reinforces associations with computational precision, modularity, and logical completeness, important qualities for server solutions. The “I” is horizontally segmented, introducing a constructive pause that creates rhythm and strengthens visual flow. The repeated “N” is symmetrical, with the right side mirroring the left, enhancing a sense of balance and repetition akin to machine logic. The final “X” is perfectly symmetrical, with angled intersections that close the mark into a finished form.
The entire wordmark is rendered in a saturated green close to lime or fresh green. This was chosen for its visual freshness and as a conceptual marker of growth, technological innovation, clarity, and sustainability. In the open-source environment, green often symbolizes progress and renewal; in this context, it also acts as a counterpoint to red, which is associated with errors in server terminology. The white background maintains transparency, keeping the focus on the lettering and ensuring legibility across all digital platforms.
The composition is built without additional symbols, emphasizing the product’s self-sufficiency and technological maturity. Its identity scales easily, with the wordmark used as a standalone sign and linked to a hexagon-shaped emblem, in which the letter “N” is placed inside the outline of a “G,” another reference to the software core’s architectural structure.
Despite the introduction of additional visual elements and brands within the NGINX ecosystem after 2013, the core logo has remained unchanged. It continues to be used both on the project’s official resources and in the commercial NGINX Plus line. Keeping it in its original form reinforces a sense of continuity and trust in an architecture that, despite commercialization and globalization, remains committed to engineering rigor and minimalist aesthetics.
