Assa Abloy: Brand overview

Assa Abloy was established in 1994 after the merger of the Swedish company ASSA and the Finnish group Abloy. Both companies had more than a century of experience in lock manufacturing. ASSA, founded in 1881, specialized in cylinder mechanisms. Abloy, founded in 1907, patented the disc mechanism that secured its leadership in the Finnish market.

After the merger, the company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Expansion began through acquisitions. From 1995 to 1999, Assa Abloy acquired more than 30 companies, including British Yale Security and Israeli Mul-T-Lock. In the 2000s, the company strengthened its position in North America and Asia. It acquired Corbin Russwin, Hörmann Flexon, and the Chinese Pan Pan Security Locks.

By the mid-2000s, Assa Abloy had become the world’s largest manufacturer of locks and door hardware. In the 2010s, its focus shifted to electronic and smart access systems. In 2012, the company acquired HID Global for $ 1.9 billion. This move opened access to the contactless technology market.

In 2017, the company acquired the startup August Home, which developed smartphone-controlled smart locks. In 2019, it purchased AGTA Record, a manufacturer of automatic doors. In the 2020s, the company invested in cloud and mobile security solutions.

In 2023, Assa Abloy introduced digital keys designed for the hospitality sector. In 2024, it released a line of locks integrated with voice assistants.

The company manages more than 100 brands and operates in about 70 countries. It remains the world’s largest producer of access control and security solutions.

Assa Abloy Logo

ASSA ABLOY was formed following the merger of two well-known lock manufacturers: the Swedish company ASSA and the Finnish company Abloy Oy. With the emergence of the new group, which began trading on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, there was a need to reflect its origins in the logo.

The brand name consists of the words “ASSA” and “ABLOY,” written in uppercase letters on a single line. Both words are rendered in black, using a strict, blocky, sans-serif font. The characters are positioned very close together, creating a dense and monolithic text block. The letters are straight, with simple and clean shapes, in the style of Helvetica Neue Black or Arial Black.

The separation into two words reflects the companies’ merger, emphasizing that each has contributed to the overall brand. Thanks to its minimalist style, the name looks solid and aligns with the company’s core business: developing and producing high-security locks and security systems.
