Food production involves developing flavors, textures, and ingredients for finished products. These components define the characteristics of food and beverages and influence how they are perceived. The Kerry Group logo is associated with a company that develops ingredients and flavor solutions for the food industry and supplies them to food manufacturers.
Kerry Group was founded in 1972 in County Kerry, Ireland, as North Kerry Milk Products. Initially, the company included the state-owned Dairy Disposal Company, a local farmers’ cooperative, and the American firm Erie Casein. Its main business was exporting casein.
After Ireland joined the European Economic Community in 1973, dairy enterprises began consolidating. Kerry expanded its assets and, in 1974, established Kerry Cooperative Creameries Limited, a cooperative. By the late 1970s, it had acquired several plants and strengthened its position in the domestic market.
Since the early 1980s, Kerry has been diversifying its production. The company entered the meat processing and prepared food sectors. In 1986, the cooperative became a public company, Kerry Group plc. It listed shares on the Irish and London Stock Exchanges.
In the late 1980s, the company entered the U.S. market. The company opened a plant in Wisconsin and acquired Beatreme Food Ingredients. In the 1990s, the company expanded internationally. In 1994, the company opened a plant in Mexico and acquired the DCA business in the United States. In 1998, it purchased Dalgety’s ingredients division.
In 2001, the company completed the acquisition of Golden Vale for 391 million euros. By the mid-2000s, the company had become a global producer of food ingredients. Annual revenue exceeded 4.5 billion euros.
In 2023 and 2024, the group carried out a series of transactions to develop its taste and nutrition businesses. In December 2023, Kerry acquired Chr. Hansen’s enzyme business and Novozymes for 150 million euros. In 2024, the company agreed to sell its dairy division to a farmers’ cooperative for 1.4 billion euros.
By the end of 2024, the company had completed the transaction and reduced its share count to 166 million. For the year, revenue reached almost 8 billion euros. Sales grew by 3.3 percent, and earnings per share increased by 9.7 percent. The company expects further growth in sales and profitability. It continues to strengthen its status as one of the world’s leading producers of food ingredients.
Meaning and History
What is Kerry Group?
An Irish corporation that holds a leading position in the global food industry, specializing in the production of ingredients for food and beverages. Its plants in 23 countries manufacture more than 15,000 products and supply them to 140 nations. Annual turnover reaches about 5€ billion. The company grew out of a dairy cooperative in County Kerry and operates in three areas: producing flavorings, food additives, and taste systems; manufacturing meat products for markets in Ireland and the United Kingdom; and agribusiness.
1900s – 2020
The name Kerry Group comes from County Kerry in southwestern Ireland. North Kerry Milk Products began operating in Listowel in 1972, laying the foundation for the future group. Over time, the geographic name became part of the company’s name. It formed the basis of the logo featuring the large word “KERRY.”
Three partners established the business. The government-owned Dairy Disposal Company, a federation of eight local dairy cooperatives, and the American Erie Casein Company financed the purchase of a facility for producing milk protein for export to the United States. Kerry Group plc was formed in 1986. It consolidated the assets of Kerry Co-operative Creameries and prepared the business for a public stock exchange listing.
By the late 1990s, the company was using a logo with the white word “KERRY” on a dark blue panel. Five uppercase sans-serif letters appeared in the center of a horizontally elongated field. The panel’s upper and lower edges curved slightly outward. A rich blue background surrounded the white letters. At the same time, the logo name was limited to the word “Kerry,” referring to the group’s place of origin.
A warm yellow-orange shade appeared in two details. A short diagonal stroke occupied the upper-right section of the letter “Y”. It was separated from the letter’s white portion. Beveled edges gave it the form of a small wedge resembling a parallelogram. A horizontal band in the same color ran beneath the wordmark. It occupied the lower portion of the panel and narrowed toward both ends. The shared shade connected the band with the colored section of the “Y.”
2020 – today
Kerry updated its global brand in 2020 to unite its international divisions under one identity. By then, the company had expanded from dairy production into ingredients, flavors, and food technologies. The previous blue logo had been used during a period of international acquisitions and research center development. The new identity was intended to cover all areas of the business and connect them with the corporate statement “Inspiring Food, Nourishing Life.”
The Dublin studio RichardsDee developed the project. Simon Richards, Ryan Kavanagh, Paul Guinan, and Martin Fanning created the design. Celine Dee, Steve Payne, and Jim Dunne led brand development. The update was unveiled in fall 2020 together with the “Beyond the Horizon” program. The launch was connected with the company’s nutrition plans through 2030, including its goal of reaching more than 2 billion people with relevant products.
The logo retained the uppercase “KERRY” name, but removed the panel and orange details. The dark blue-green color maintained a connection with the previous identity. The heavy sans-serif letters received extended horizontal strokes and sharp diagonal cuts. The upper diagonal section of the “K” took the shape of an elongated diamond. Thick strokes gave the wordmark a heavy appearance, while the angular terminals complemented its geometric construction.
A separate dark turquoise arc appeared beneath the name. It curves upward, widens in the middle, and narrows toward the edges. RichardsDee named it the “horizon line.” Its smooth curve complements the angular letters and refers to the “Beyond the Horizon” program.
To implement it, RichardsDee developed an overall brand architecture, ten development principles, and rules for integrating acquired companies into the Kerry system. They defined how divisions would transition to a unified name and helped present the group’s combined experience and capabilities. Individual product areas became parts of the shared corporate identity.
