The Cape Cod Home Magazine logo embodies the atmosphere of coastal living, uniting the ideas of designers, architects, and homeowners who seek to create a cozy, seaside-style space. The magazine explores the world of charming cottages, spacious verandas, and picturesque gardens, offering inspiration for every corner of a home, from interior design to summer patios.

Cape Cod Home Magazine: Brand overview

Cape Cod Home Magazine grew from Cape Cod Life Publications, founded in 1979 by Brian Shortsleeve. After working at Cahners Publishing in Boston, he launched Cape Cod Life to cover the culture and daily life of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. His personal column appeared in every issue, giving the family publisher a consistent voice.

Cape Cod HOME debuted in 1997 as a separate title focused on architecture, interiors, and houses across the region. Its subject matter included the traditional Cape Cod house, known for symmetrical facades, steep roofs, central chimneys, and cedar shingles weathered by the coastal climate. The magazine documented how local homes preserved or adapted those forms.

During the 2000s, coverage expanded to contemporary interiors, outdoor spaces, gardens, architects, and designers. The publication addressed readers who owned or planned to buy homes on the peninsula and nearby islands. It occupied a narrower regional niche than Coastal Living or Yankee Magazine, both of which covered far broader areas.

In the 2010s, restoration projects received greater attention, with reports on owners retaining original materials and architectural details. Cape Cod Life Publications marked its 45th anniversary in 2024. Its portfolio then included Cape Cod Life, Cape Cod HOME, Cape Cod ART, and Cape Cod DOG. Janice Rogers served as editor-in-chief, and the company employed about 18 people and generated roughly $5 million in annual revenue.

1996 – today

Cape Cod Home Magazine Logo

The launch of a new magazine about construction and interiors on the Cape Cod peninsula required an emblem that could emphasize the publication’s authority and continuity. In 1996, Cape Cod Life Publications introduced the Cape Cod Home Magazine project, and with the debut issue, a logo was unveiled, executed in the tradition of premium-level typography.

The composition is built on asymmetry. On the left is the region name, “CAPE COD,” in two tiers, set in a smaller serif font. On the right is the word “HOME,” executed in large letters in an antique typeface with refined serifs and delicate horizontals. The editorial team refined the font manually, bringing it closer to the aesthetics of Trajan and Goudy Old Style.

The text’s hierarchy is arranged so that “CAPE COD” occupies a supporting position, while the main focus is on “HOME,” which conveys the magazine’s primary theme.

The palette is limited to a black-and-white range. Their restraint emphasizes academic character and aligns with the image of a publication targeting the premium segment of the architecture and design market.

The applied fonts emphasize a respectable character. Capital letters with moderate serifs and increased letter spacing create visual harmony and enhance readability. The typeface is close to classical book models, which reinforces the image of a serious and professional source.

The unchanged logo of Cape Cod Home Magazine has demonstrated stability for decades. It has become a symbol of Cape Cod Home Magazine’s expert approach. It is perceived as a reflection of the publishing house’s high level of competence in construction, architecture, and interior design within the region.
