The NRC logo has become the symbol of one of the leading Dutch publications, where news is combined with in-depth analysis. Readers appreciate its objectivity, investigative reporting, and expert opinions, making the newspaper a significant player in the journalism industry.

NRC: Brand overview

In 1970, two prominent Dutch newspapers, Algemeen Handelsblad (founded in Amsterdam in 1828) and Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (founded in Rotterdam in 1844), merged to form NRC Handelsblad. Algemeen Handelsblad had a strong foundation in business and trade news, later broadening its coverage to include politics and culture. At the same time, Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant was known for its international coverage and economic reporting.

In the 1980s, NRC Handelsblad broadened its thematic scope, introducing monthly supplements dedicated to culture, literature, and science. The paper was an early adopter of digital technologies, launching its website in 1996 and becoming a leader in online journalism within the Netherlands. To engage younger readers, “nrc.next,” a morning edition, debuted in 2000.

Significant modernization occurred in 2006, including a comprehensive redesign of both print and digital editions. In 2015, the name was simplified to NRC, coinciding with the introduction of enhanced digital capabilities. By 2018, the NRC had implemented a focused digital strategy that emphasized subscription models, multimedia journalism, and interactive storytelling.

In 2020, as it celebrated its 50th anniversary, NRC further expanded its online presence. Between 2021 and 2022, podcasts, videos, and active social media initiatives were integrated. By 2024, NRC remained a leading news provider in the Netherlands, striking a balance between traditional journalism and evolving digital formats.

What is NRC?

This is one of the leading daily newspapers in the Netherlands, providing readers with current news, analytical reports, and in-depth coverage of significant social and cultural issues. The publication is known for its independent approach, rigorous fact-checking, and detailed analysis of global events. In addition to its print edition, the newspaper publishes podcasts, multimedia materials, and special reports on digital platforms, ensuring information is accessible in various formats.

Before 2022

In the early 2000s, when NRC Handelsblad’s management considered a complete style renewal, Gerrit Noordzij was entrusted with a key role. The well-known Dutch typographer introduced a new NRC emblem in 2001, which, with minor adjustments, remained in use for two decades.

The construction was based on horizontal division. In the upper block was the abbreviation “nrc,” typed in lowercase characters with strong serifs and increased stroke weight. In the right corner was a red angular arrow, the shape of which resembled the “greater than” sign. Its geometry hinted at the newspaper’s orientation toward relevance and news promptness.

The lower level was occupied by the word “handelsblad.” It was written in a serif font with elegant proportions, differing from the upper part in stroke thickness. The elongated lines and fine structure of the glyphs formed an expressive contrast with the heavy lettering of the abbreviation. The use of lowercase added a sense of calm and indicated secondary status relative to the main part.

The entire palette was limited to black and red. All the text was set in black, emphasizing analytical seriousness and the newspaper’s status as an influential voice in the Dutch press. The red arrow remained the only accent, enlivening the composition and adding an emotional touch to the strict typographic structure.

The combination of the massive abbreviation, the elegant subtitle, and the single-color marker corresponded to the newspaper’s position as a publication with a developed analytical section and strong cultural content. The emblem expressed NRC Handelsblad’s role as a newspaper that combined business specialization with an interest in social processes.

The initial impetus for the redesign was the newspaper’s name change. After the cancellation of evening editions, the editorial board institutionalized the shortened designation “NRC.” The mark lost the second text block and focused on the abbreviation, which became the only marker of identity. The word “handelsblad” disappeared.

The red arrow affixed to the right of the lettering remained present in the structure. Its shade in the new version is perceived as slightly muted. The difference is noticeable only when compared with the previous NRC logo, which was one or two levels brighter.

The semantic simplification of the mark emphasizes the newspaper’s course toward renewal while respecting the previous version. For the audience, the changes served as a visual confirmation of the shift in the newspaper’s status and form in the Dutch media market.
