Ciroc: Brand overview

The history of Ciroc vodka started in France with Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, a winemaker whose family had been involved in winemaking since the 16th century. With a background in enology and a decade at Hennessy, Robicquet co-founded EWG Spirits & Wines with Diageo in 2001.

Ciroc vodka was launched in 2003, named after the high-altitude vineyards in Gaillac. It’s produced from Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc grapes through a unique five-stage distillation. The final distillation takes place in copper pot stills at the historic Chevanceaux distillery in southern France, yielding a smooth, citrus-flavored vodka.

Initially slow to gain traction, the brand’s popularity surged in 2007 after Diageo partnered with rapper Sean Combs (also known as Puff Daddy), who promoted it in the club and music scenes.

Starting in 2010, flavored varieties like coconut, peach, vanilla, and pineapple were introduced. In 2018, the brand expanded into the brandy category.

After ending its partnership with Combs in 2024, Diageo retained the rights. Today, Ciroc remains one of the leading premium vodkas produced from grapes grown in France.

The Ciroc logo, created at the brand’s launch, features a three-dimensional sphere and a distinctive typographic style. The visual presentation emphasizes the product’s premium status: a French grape vodka crafted by Maison Villevert under the direction of winemaker and chemist Jean-Sébastien Robicquet.

The centerpiece of the emblem is a blue spherical element that visually resembles a precious cabochon carved from azure granite. The sphere’s inner structure has a deep texture of smoky, swirling lines, evoking ice crystals or cold vapor. This visual metaphor highlights the purity of the spirit, its ice filtration, and the high quality of the distillation process, while also referencing the origin of the brand’s name (“cime” meaning summit, “roche” meaning rock), symbolizing icy peaks and the purity of mountain springs.

The Ciroc wordmark is set in a custom geometric sans serif with fine, precise lines and balanced proportions. A notable feature is the circumflex over the letter “Î,” which serves as a graphic accent, emphasizing the vodka’s French origin. While structurally similar to typefaces like Avant Garde Gothic or Avenir Next, the letters have elongated, elegant contours specifically designed to complement the brand’s visual language.

Beneath the main name is the phrase “ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA,” rendered in a clean sans serif with even horizontal proportions and high legibility. This reinforces the brand’s positioning and clearly defines the product category, contributing to the perception of exclusivity.

The color palette is minimal yet impactful: the blue of the sphere conveys freshness, coldness, and purity, while the black typography adds a sense of formality, confidence, and elegance. This combination creates a sharp visual contrast that reflects the vodka’s premium status and exclusivity.

The visual identity was developed in collaboration with the renowned Italian design firm Pininfarina Extra, commissioned by Maison Villevert and global distributor Diageo. The design successfully positioned the brand in the market, distinguishing it from competitors.
