Cub Scouts is a program that prepares children aged 6-7 to 11 years old for joining the Scouts, which began in England. Today, the Cub Scout logo unites around 50 million young scouts from 11 countries.
The Cub Scout movement was officially founded in America in 1930, but the first “cubs” appeared in England in 1916 thanks to Robert Baden-Powell’s program. Since then, Cub Scouts have been opening everywhere, initially unofficially and later as a recognized part of the scouting movement. As a result of development, the ideas of the den, pack, Den Mothers, wolves, bears, tigers, lynxes, and Webelos, representing the stages of growth for a future scout, were formed. Depending on their achievements in the program, children receive various badges and patches. In different countries and regions, the organization may accept both boys and girls or only boys.
Meaning and History
The Cub Scout emblem is a rather complex concept since each participant and pack have their unique badges, which depend on the location, educational program, and level in the program, as well as achievements. Nevertheless, many groups share a common symbol – the wolf.
The choice of the wolf is not accidental. The foundation of all scouting activities is outdoor walks. During their training, children develop the ability to behave in nature and acquire survival, navigation, and knowledge of local animals and plants. Hiking trips and sports competitions are an integral part of scouting meetings.
What is Cub Scout?
Cub Scout is an international youth organization for young scouts, founded in 1916. It is a preparatory program for children up to 11 years old, who can later join the senior scouts.
The basis of the young scouts’ program is Rudyard Kipling’s book “The Jungle Book,” in which the main character is Mowgli, a boy growing up in a wolf pack. The founder of the movement suggested calling the younger generation “wolf cubs” or “wolf-cubs.”
In the program, children begin their journey with the rank of the cub, then advance to the level of bear and lion. The final stage before transitioning to adult troops is called Webelos, which is formed from the first letters of the stages: wolf (wolf), bear (bear), lion (lion), and scout (scout). Troop leaders take the names of Mowgli’s mentors: Akela, Bagheera, and Baloo.
The organization’s logo depicts a cubic emblem with a wolf’s face, the organization’s name, and a heraldic fleur-de-lis on a yellow background.
The shape of the emblem is not random: the cube symbolizes youth, as the word “cube” is similar to “cub” – offspring. The four vertices of the figure represent the four stages of development preceding acceptance into the Boy Scouts at the age of 12. The diamond-shaped arrangement of the base with an angle upwards emphasizes the idea of growth and development: to reach the top, one must grow up and gain knowledge and skills.
The cube’s outline focuses on protection and constant guidance from experienced and caring adults. The organization aims to protect the younger generation from physical injuries and negative influences. Children are provided with only verified knowledge through approved programs.
The image of only the animal’s muzzle is reminiscent of carnival masks worn by children to play a specific role. This highlights the importance of the inner essence and qualities of the beast that children should assimilate: strength, agility, speed, and the ability to navigate the forest.
The heraldic fleur-de-lis is a symbol of the scouting movement. The logo indicates that the children are gradually moving towards transitioning to the Boy Scouts. Originally, the fleur-de-lis was a symbol of French kings and embodied grandeur and dignity. In the scouting movement, the three petals of the flower symbolize the three aspects of a young scout’s duty: to oneself, society, and God.
Font and Colors
The main colors of the emblem are blue and yellow.
Blue symbolizes learning, knowledge, and growth, reflecting the main goal of the program – to impart important skills. This shade also represents protection, privileged status, and stability. In the context of scouting, blue is associated with loyalty, reliability, discipline, and focus.
Yellow represents the color of childhood. It shows that knowledge is transmitted in a playful form, and group meetings are filled with fun, joy, and a good mood.
A small amount of white color hints at the youth of the participants and their initial stage in the large-scale scouting movement.
The unusual lettering of the organization’s name creates a sense that the viewer is looking at the emblem from top to bottom, focusing on the young age of the movement’s participants. Capital letters emphasize the importance of participating in the program to develop valuable character qualities. Children lay the foundation for strong health, responsibility for preserving natural resources, and understanding their duty to society.
