Google Maps Unveils New Logo and Brand Identity

Google Maps is being updated in two directions. The way the map is used is changing, and the app icon is being updated accordingly. The service is shifting away from the familiar search format toward a conversational one, where the map integrates with Google Gemini’s capabilities.

The Ask Maps feature has been introduced. Users type a query in plain text and receive a response that takes into account saved locations and past actions. Immersive Navigation with a 3D route has been added. Buildings, interchanges, and lanes are visible on the screen. Voice prompts have been made to sound more like natural speech. As a result, the service acts as an assistant, guiding you along the route and providing tips.

The icon has also been updated. The overall shape remains the same, with a drop and a round center. Changes were made to the color and proportions. The outline has become softer, and the inner circle has been enlarged. Previously, the icon was divided into colored segments; now, a smooth color transition is used across the entire surface. Red transitions into purple, then into blue, light blue, green, and yellow without sharp boundaries.

The color is distributed evenly, without strong emphasis on individual sections. The white circle in the center remains.

The update is part of Google’s overall strategy to consolidate services and integrate AI. The new design aligns with the company’s other products. However, user reactions have been mixed. In discussions, people note that the enlarged circle and soft transitions affect how the icon looks when scaled down or displayed in a dark theme.

The new icon retains the familiar silhouette but changes the color scheme. It reflects the transition from a static map to a service that helps users navigate in real time.
