Everyday food products include instant noodles, oil, flour, and other household staples. These products are produced by processing raw materials and supplying them to retail chains nationwide. The Indofood logo is associated with a company that produces a wide range of food products and serves the mass market in Indonesia.
Indofood Sukses Makmur began operations in 1968. That year, Sudono Salim founded the company Indomie in Jakarta. The production of instant noodles using Japanese technology became popular, driven by affordable prices and flavors that closely resemble Indonesian cuisine.
In the 1970s, the brand became a market leader in Indonesia. In 1982, Salim consolidated all his food assets under the Indofood brand. In 1990, the company was registered as PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk. In 1994, the company’s shares were listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange.
By the mid-1990s, the company had expanded its product range. It began producing beverages, snacks, and dairy products. The financial crisis of 1997 and 1998 forced the corporation to restructure its debts. By 2000, a controlling stake had passed to First Pacific Company under the leadership of Anthony Salim, the founder’s son.
In the 2000s, the company regained its growth momentum. It held more than 70 percent of Indonesia’s noodle market. In 2009, Indofood acquired a stake in China Minzhong Food Corporation, a Chinese company. In 2014, it made investments in palm plantation development through Indofood Agri Resources.
In 2015 and 2016, the company faced criticism from international organizations over environmental issues. Afterward, Indofood strengthened control over production standards. In 2017, it introduced automation, and in 2018, it launched a line of premium and healthy products.
From 2020 to 2022, the company accelerated its digital transformation and launched a platform for business clients. By 2023, the Indomie brand was exported to more than 80 countries and had become a symbol of Indonesia’s food industry.
The company maintains a leading position in the region. It combines traditional business areas with innovation and the development of new product categories.
Meaning and History
What is Indofood?
The largest player in Indonesia’s food industry manages a full production cycle, from growing raw materials to delivering finished products. Operations include four interconnected areas: the production of branded consumer goods (instant noodles, dairy products, snacks, seasonings), flour milling under the Bogasari brand, agribusiness (seed production, oil palm cultivation, oil and margarine manufacturing), and an extensive nationwide distribution network.
1990 – today
Indofood’s corporate history began on August 14, 1990, with the incorporation of PT Panganjaya Intikusuma. Businesses that later became part of the group had operated earlier. The consumer products division began producing noodles in 1982 and entered the snack segment in 1990. In 1994, the company became PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk and listed its shares on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
The year 1968 belongs to the early history of the Indomie brand. The noodles appeared before the modern corporation and developed as a separate product. Indofood’s legal timeline begins in 1990. Following the reorganization, the group combined the production of noodles, snacks, seasonings, and flour, later adding agribusiness and distribution. Its operations covered the entire food cycle, from raw materials and processing to finished products.
The name Indofood consists of two parts. Indo refers to Indonesia, while the English word “food” identifies the company’s industry. The Indonesian words “sukses makmur” refer to success and prosperity. The full name PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk represents the group’s Indonesian origins and food business.
Indofood belongs to the Salim Group and is the largest food and beverage manufacturer in Indonesia. The parent company combines numerous businesses, while products are sold under separate brands. They include Indomie, Supermi, Sarimi, Chitato, Indomilk, and Bogasari. Indomie instant noodles have achieved the greatest recognition.
The logo consists of the blue Indofood wordmark. The initial “I” is uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The italic serif typeface has moderate contrast between stroke widths. The printed letters include flowing lines resembling handwritten lettering.
The initial “I” has a large upper bar and increased height. Its lower stroke extends beneath the line and connects with a flourish. The long lower section of the letter “f” runs beneath the neighboring letters and forms a loop. A blue line begins beneath the “n,” extends along the name, and ends beneath the final “d.” All parts form a connected wordmark.
Indomie represents noodles, Bogasari belongs to the flour milling business, and the other brands cover snacks, dairy products, and seasonings. Indofood identifies the parent group in materials for shareholders, partners, and business audiences.
