Infosys: Brand overview

Infosys was founded in Pune on July 2, 1981, by seven engineers with $250 borrowed by Narayana Murthy from his wife, Sudha. Nandan Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh, N. S. Raghavan and Ashok Arora had worked with Murthy at Patni Computer Systems. The first office was Raghavan’s home, while New York-based Data Basics Corporation became the first client.

The founders kept costs low and pursued profit from the beginning. Headquarters moved to Bangalore in 1983. A Boston office opened in 1987, marking the start of overseas expansion. Infosys developed a global delivery model in which it gathered requirements at client sites. At the same time, it produced software in India, giving the company a cost advantage over competitors such as Accenture.

Infosys went public in India in 1993, with Morgan Stanley buying 13% at 95 rupees per share. The proceeds funded development centres and recruitment. In 1999, Infosys became the first Indian company listed on NASDAQ, when annual revenue had reached $100 million. Progeon, later Infosys BPM, opened in 2002, followed by Infosys Consulting Inc. in the United States in 2004, when revenue passed $1 billion.

After decades of founder-led management, SAP executive Vishal Sikka became the first outside CEO in 2014. He promoted automation, artificial intelligence and design thinking, then resigned in 2017 amid conflict with the founders. Salil Parekh, of Capgemini, became CEO in January 2018, while Nandan Nilekani returned as non-executive chairman.

Infosys Logo

In use since 1996, the Infosys logo was created by the Bangalore-based design studio Ray and Kesavan when the company was positioning itself on the global stage alongside industry giants such as IBM and Accenture.

The Infosys wordmark is set in a sans-serif typeface similar to Lucida Sans, with smooth, restrained lines and fine letter connections. Compositionally, the logo is divided into three parts: the standalone capital “I,” the “fo” pair connected by an elegant horizontal line, and the final “sys” block symbolizing system unity. Special emphasis is placed on the “f” and “o,” which are intertwined in a harmonious design. This detail references both the company’s founder and its Indian origins. The central letter “o,” shaped to resemble the Ashoka Chakra wheel from the Indian flag, subtly highlights the brand’s national roots and cultural heritage.

The restrained blue (Pantone 285 C) used throughout the mark conveys professionalism, stability, and loyalty. This shade is perceived by audiences as a symbol of reliability, trust, and calm confidence, aligning with the company’s slogan, “Driven by values, powered by intellect.”

The connected “sys” letters visually express the idea of integrated information systems, referencing the company’s original name, “Informational Systems.” The proportions of the lowercase letters are nearly equal in height to the capital “I,” resulting in an overall harmonious and elegantly balanced appearance.

The visual language of the Infosys logo is a carefully considered, multi-layered expression of the brand’s corporate identity and its core ideas: integrity, intellect, and national heritage.

Infosys Symbol

The Infosys logo typeface is an adapted sans serif with soft, flowing letterforms. Its design incorporates refined letter connections, such as the extended horizontal stroke linking the “f” and “o” and the elegant joining of the “sys” letters. In terms of form and style, the typeface is similar to fonts like OL Radiant Spender or Stylette JNL. However, the letter contours have been modified and personalized to create a unique typographic character.

The color palette is based on a single shade of blue (Pantone 285 C). This deep yet soft and calm tone is associated with reliability, stability, and professionalism. It is widely used in the IT and digital services industries, as users perceive it as a guarantee of transparency and data security. The chosen blue communicates intellect and trust while emphasizing Infosys’ technological expertise and corporate reputation.
