Metal Slug began in 1996, when Nazca Corporation created the first game for SNK’s Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Its hand-drawn animation, side-scrolling battles, vehicles, and dark humor placed the series beside Konami’s Contra. SNK later absorbed Nazca and continued the franchise with Metal Slug 2 through 7 on arcade machines and home consoles. Development of the main line slowed after Metal Slug 7 appeared in 2008.
SNK Playmore revived the property for mobile devices with Metal Slug Attack, announced in November 2015 and released for Android and iOS on February 14, 2016. Instead of classic run-and-gun action, it used tower-defense battles, collectible squads, base attacks, events, and free-to-play purchases. Frequent updates and new characters helped the title exceed 8 million downloads during almost seven years online.
In October 2022, SNK announced the end of service because it could no longer maintain the intended player experience. Servers closed at 4 p.m. Japan Standard Time on January 12, 2023. The game then became unavailable, players lost years of progress, and purchased medals were not refunded.
Metal Slug Attack Reloaded launched worldwide on June 18, 2024, for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X/S. The paid edition removed microtransactions, offered nearly 300 characters, and retained Another Story missions and an artwork gallery. Its offline format preserved much of the mobile version for permanent access without relying on active servers.

At the top, there’s a powerful black silhouette of a massive tracked military vehicle, equipped with imposing cannons, with a flag waving behind it. A small detail: the letters “PF” are visible on the body. This is the signature mark of the Peregrine Falcons, the main squad in the legendary Metal Slug series. Next to the vehicle, a soldier is seen flying forward with his weapon at the ready, propelled by an explosion or a powerful jump.
The central part features the “METAL SLUG” title. The font is massive, as if made of metal with camouflage inserts, evoking images of armor, tanks, and warfare. The letters appear three-dimensional, with a metallic shine and a thick black outline that adds to their toughness and durability.
Below the main title, the word “ATTACK” is painted bright red with a sharp slant. This creates an aggressive tone and the energy of battle.
