My First Summer Logo is a story about the fragility of feelings, the search for intimacy, and a summer that leaves a mark on the soul. In the silence of solitude, two girls find in each other the freedom to be themselves, to share joy and fear of change, and to keep moments they want to keep forever.
Before “My First Summer” became her feature debut, Australian writer and director Katie Found built experience through short films. Her project “The Widow” received funding from Screen NSW and was developed through Metro Screen’s First Breaks Program before being shown at festivals in Australia and overseas. In 2016, Found won the Australian Writers Guild Monte Miller Award for her script “It Will Peck You” and joined the AWG Pathways Program.
Production of “My First Summer” took place in 2019 in rural Victoria near Castlemaine. Jonathan auf der Heide and Alisha Hnatjuk produced the film under Noise & Light. Matthew Chuang shot the film, Annabel Johnson edited it, and Kyle Morton composed the soundtrack. The story follows Claudia, played by Markella Kavenagh, a young woman raised in isolation who is left alone after her mother’s death, and Grace, played by Maiah Stewardson, a local girl who discovers her and forms a close connection.
“My First Summer” premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival on October 17, 2020. In 2021, the film entered international festival programs, including BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Film Festival, and OUTshine. The movie received reviews from publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The New York Times, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Time Out.
In 2021, “My First Summer” was nominated for an AACTA Award in the Best Indie Film category. Peccadillo Pictures became the international distributor, bringing the film to overseas streaming platforms, while Stan released it in Australia. The film remains Katie Found’s only feature-length work and became a notable project in Australian independent cinema.
