Lakeshore Entertainment was founded in Beverly Hills in 1994 by Tom Rosenberg and Ted Tannebaum after Rosenberg sold his stake in Beacon Pictures. Sigurjón Sighvatsson became its first president, followed by Gary Lucchesi in 1998. The company focused on mid-budget films financed partly through international presales and signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures in 1995. In 1996, it acquired New World Pictures’ post-1984 library.
Early releases included Runaway Bride and Arlington Road (1999), followed by The Gift (2000). Lakeshore’s main franchise became Underworld, launched in 2003 with Kate Beckinsale. The first film earned over $95 million on a $22 million budget and led to four sequels released from 2006 to 2016.
Lakeshore co-produced Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby in 2004. At the 2005 Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor, with Rosenberg receiving the Oscar as producer. Later releases included The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Crank, The Ugly Truth, and The Lincoln Lawyer. A television division opened in 2013, followed by the digital studio Off the Dock in 2015.
In 2019, Lakeshore sold nearly 300 titles and its international operations to Vine Alternative Investments for about $200 million. Lakeshore Records went to Cutting Edge Group in 2020. The film assets later moved under Village Roadshow Pictures as Lakeshore Village Entertainment, before Vine sold the portfolio to Shamrock Capital in 2024.
