Nismo: Brand overview

Nismo was registered in Tokyo’s Omori district in September 1984 as Nissan Motorsports International Co. Ltd. The company united Nissan’s racing parts sales, driver support, and a specialist testing unit from the Oppama plant. Its first president was Yasuharu Namba, who brought experience from Nissan’s testing division and helped turn the new structure into a focused motorsport operation.

The first major result came in October 1985, when Kazuyoshi Hoshino, Akira Hagiwara, and Keiji Matsumoto won the Japanese WEC round at Fuji in a March 85G Nissan. In 1986, Nissan entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time. Nismo’s road-racing profile grew further in 1989 with the Skyline GT-R R32, developed for Group A regulations with ATTESA all-wheel drive and the twin-turbo RB26DETT engine.

From 1990 to 1993, the R32 won all 29 JTCC races it entered. It also won the Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992, the Spa 24 Hours in 1991, and the Daytona 24 Hours in 1992. At Le Mans, Nissan’s R90CP finished 5th overall in 1990, while the R33-based NISMO GT-R LM took 10th place in 1995.

For the GT1 era, Nismo worked with TWR on the R390 GT1, designed by Ian Callum and Tony Southgate. In 1998, Masahiko Kageyama, Aguri Suzuki, and Kazuyoshi Hoshino finished third at Le Mans, Nissan’s best result at the race to date. From the 2000s onward, Nismo expanded beyond racing into tuned Nissan production cars with upgraded suspension, engines, and aerodynamics. After the GT-R R35 arrived in 2007, the name became a full performance line linking Nissan’s track programs with road cars.

The letter construction conveys the body’s angular profile, which the company used initially.

The brand name comes from the first syllables of the company’s full name, Nissan Motorsport, which suggests the firm focuses on creating sports cars.

The top and bottom of the letter S allude to the two divisions that merged to form one company and tell the story of the first legendary Saurus sports car, originally sold alongside the Jura minivan.

1998 – 2004

The company secured unconditional leadership across all positions in the demanding Le Mans race, and its cars were also recognized as the safest in the event of accidents. A very patriotic logo was created as a sign of pride.

The letter O at the end of the word is transformed into a red circle. It is one of Japan’s symbols, representing the Sun. It is placed on the country’s flag. In the emblem, the sign emphasizes Nismo’s love and reverence for the place of its discovery and the desire to glorify the homeland.

The circle also resembles a wheel and indicates the company’s direction. The red color conveys speed and racing.

The lettering moved from the upper register to the lower, which hints at the squat growth of sports cars and the need for a streamlined shape. The absence of capital letters indicates that the company is servicing other teams’ race cars and tuning customers’ cars.

All letters except I are slanted to the right to symbolize striving for development. The modified I glyph recalls the silhouette of a racecar.

2004 – today

Nissan developed a three-year development plan for the company. As part of the modernization, the logo was slightly adjusted. All letters received a slope to the right, the transformation of I disappeared, and the last letter took the usual look, although it remained red. The changes made the logo more harmonious. It represents the perfection and technical thinking of the cars.
