Smithfield Foods takes its name from the town where the brand’s history began. On September 16, 1936, Joseph W. Luter Sr. and Joseph W. Luter Jr. opened a small ham processing and curing operation on Commerce Street in Smithfield, Virginia. The business was originally named The Smithfield Packing Company.
The Smithfield name came from the town of Smithfield, Virginia. The company was founded there and continues to maintain its headquarters there. The business later became Smithfield Foods, Inc.
