Sumitomo Electric Industries grew from a copper manufacturing business in Osaka. The company began operations as Sumitomo Copper Rolling Works in 1897, producing copper wire and cables. In 1911, the business was registered as Sumitomo Electric Wire & Cable Works. The name Sumitomo Electric Wire & Cable Works, Ltd. appeared in 1920, and the company later became Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
The Sumitomo name is connected to the historic Japanese commercial and industrial group known as the Sumitomo Group. Its roots extend to Masatomo Sumitomo and the Izumiya copper business. The Sumitomo Electric logo uses the Igeta, the shared symbol of Sumitomo. It is associated with Izumiya, a business founded by Riemon Soga in Kyoto in 1590. “Izumi” translates as “spring” or “fountain,” so the diamond-shaped frame of a traditional well became part of the group’s heritage.
The modern logo consists of the Igeta on the left and the SUMITOMO ELECTRIC wordmark on the right. The blue emblem is formed from four rectangles arranged in a diamond-shaped lattice with an open center. Lines extend from the Igeta in four directions. They resemble elongated copper wires and refer to the company’s early manufacturing operations.
The name appears on the right in two lines. All letters are uppercase and use the same blue color. The upright sans-serif typeface resembles Helvetica Bold or Gotham. The primary color is called Sumitomo Electric Blue. The guidelines describe it as the bluish-purple color of the Igeta, associated with social responsibility, trust, the principle of banji-nissei, and the heritage passed down from the copper business.
