Sumitomo Metal Mining traces its history back to 1590. That year, Riemon Soga in Kyoto began copper smelting and developed a method for separating silver. His work laid the foundation for the future business. In 1691, the company began developing the Besshi mine in Ehime Prefecture and became one of Japan’s leading copper producers.
In 1905, a copper smelting plant was launched on the island of Shisaka. It played an important role in the development of production. In 1927, the company Sumitomo Besshi Mining Co., Ltd. was established. In 1937, based on it, Sumitomo Mining Co. Ltd. was formed, expanding operations into coal mining.
In 1939, the company introduced emission treatment systems and began nickel production. In 1950, after World War II, the organization adopted its modern name, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. In 1954, the company invested in Taihei Metal Industry. In 1956, Hyuga Smelting Co. was founded to produce ferronickel.
In the 1960s, new plants were established, and the Central Research Laboratory was opened. In 1971, the Toyo copper smelting plant began operations. In 1982, the Hishikari gold deposit was discovered, making it Japan’s largest.
Since the late 1980s, the company has expanded internationally. The company participated in copper mining projects in the United States, Indonesia, Peru, and Chile. These initiatives strengthened Sumitomo Metal Mining’s global position. In 2017, the company invested about 4 billion yen in producing lithium nickel oxide used in batteries supplied to Panasonic.
By the 2020s, Sumitomo Metal Mining had become one of the leading producers of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
In 2025, copper production volumes were planned to decrease by 2.6 percent. This reflected a shift toward manufacturing high-tech materials for electric vehicles and renewable energy.

What is Sumitomo Metal Mining?
One of the oldest metallurgical groups in Japan, formerly part of the Sumitomo Group. The company produced rolled steel sheets, large-diameter pipes, metal structures, auto parts, titanium products, and electronic components. It carried out engineering projects and leased or sold real estate. The headquarters was located in Osaka. It was the first in Japan to master the production of cold-rolled seamless pipes and to supply products to the automotive, construction, and machinery industries. After merging with Nippon Steel, it became the world’s second-largest steelmaking group by production volume.
1950 – 2019
Sumitomo Metal Mining is connected to the Sumitomo copper business, and its old logo featuring the Igeta reflected this relationship. Its roots extend to Izumiya, a business established by Riemon Soga in Kyoto in 1590. The name “Izumi” translates as “spring” or “fountain,” so the diamond-shaped frame of a traditional well became part of Sumitomo’s historical heritage.
The modern corporate line began in March 1950 under the name Besshi Mining Co., Ltd. In June 1952, the company became Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The original “igeta” emblem was restored in the same year. Earlier names in the company’s history included Sumitomo Besshi Mining Co., Ltd., Sumitomo Mining Co., Ltd., Seika Kogyo Co., Ltd., and Besshi Mining Co., Ltd.
The old Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. logo consisted of a light blue Igeta on the left and the full company name on the right. The symbol was a diamond composed of four slanted rectangles. Two sections ran diagonally to the right, while the other two ran diagonally to the left. A white diamond remained in the center.
The words SUMITOMO METAL MINING CO., LTD. appeared on the right in uppercase black letters. The upright sans-serif typeface resembled Helvetica Bold. The vertical letter strokes and black punctuation formed the text into a formal business block.
In the old version, the Igeta indicated the company’s connection to the Sumitomo heritage. The SMM symbol later became the primary mark in the company’s identity. According to the brand description, SMM stands for Sumitomo Metal Mining. At the same time, the three letters are associated with Smelting and Refining, Mineral Resources, and Materials.
2019 – today
The updated Sumitomo Metal Mining version retained the Igeta-based structure. The light blue diamond-shaped symbol remained on the left. It consists of four slanted rectangles forming a lattice with a white diamond in the center. The form continues the reference to Sumitomo’s historic well frame.
The main revision affected the company name on the right. The full line SUMITOMO METAL MINING CO., LTD. was replaced with the shorter SUMITOMO METAL MINING. Removing the legal suffix gave the logo a cleaner corporate presentation.
The name appears in uppercase black letters. The typeface is an upright, formal sans-serif with even strokes. Its overall appearance preserves the professional tone of the previous version and pairs naturally with the Igeta.
The structure remained unchanged. With the shorter wording, the logo appears as the unified corporate name Sumitomo Metal Mining rather than a lengthy legal designation.
