Vueling Airlines: Brand overview

Vueling Airlines began in Barcelona in 2004, founded by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros to serve Spain’s low-cost air travel market. On 1 July 2004, the airline operated its first flight from Barcelona to Ibiza. In its first year, Vueling used two leased Airbus A320 aircraft and served five routes from its Barcelona base.

Expansion started in 2005 with new links from Barcelona to European cities, including Paris and Brussels. Madrid became the airline’s second base in the same year. In 2006, Vueling listed shares on the stock exchanges of Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia, becoming the first listed low-cost airline in Europe. In 2007, it opened bases in Seville and Málaga, with 24 aircraft serving 50 routes.

In 2009, Vueling merged with Clickair, another Spanish low-cost carrier, becoming Spain’s second-largest airline after Iberia. In 2010, it opened its first international base in Amsterdam. In 2012, the airline expanded in Italy by opening a Rome base and adding domestic routes, strengthening its broader European network.

In 2013, International Airlines Group (IAG), parent company of British Airways and Iberia, acquired control of Vueling. In 2014, the carrier added its first Airbus A320neo as part of fleet renewal. By 2018, it served more than 130 destinations in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, competing with Ryanair and easyJet. In 2019, Vueling carried over 34 million passengers, and by early 2020, its fleet exceeded 120 aircraft, mainly Airbus A320 family aircraft.
