In July 2016, two major supermarket chains, the Dutch Koninklijke Ahold and the Belgian Delhaize Group, merged to form a single company and adopted the name “Ahold Delhaize.” Along with this, the brand unveiled a symbol that unifies the identities of both companies into a single striking image.

The London-based studio FutureBrand created the logo, which was unveiled on July 25, 2016, coinciding with the company’s formation. The agency’s designers successfully integrated elements from the previous identities, such as an abstract crown and lion symbolism.

The result is a symbol composed of lines forming a stylized lion’s face with a crown. The symbol has been informally dubbed the “Lion King” because it successfully combines the contours of a lion’s face with a royal attribute. Curved lines in bright green form the ears, cheekbones, and the overall shape of the lion’s head. The crown is also formed from a single line and flows smoothly into the upper part of the symbol, completing the overall figure.

The brand name is placed to the right of the symbol, split across two lines. “Ahold” is written above, and “Delhaize” below. The sans-serif font Euclid Flex is used. The capital letters “A” and “D” stand out among the lowercase letters. The text color matches the symbol’s bright green, creating a single cohesive composition.
