Banco Comercial Portugues: Brand overview

Banco Comercial Português, abbreviated as BCP, was founded on June 25, 1985, by a group of shareholders and banking specialists. The bank was created to offer an independent alternative to state financial institutions and to serve the Portuguese market, which was developing slowly at the time. Among the founders was the well-known entrepreneur Américo Ferreira de Amorim.

In 1987, BCP was listed on the Lisbon Stock Exchange. In 1990, the bank acquired a controlling stake in Banco CISF. In 1993, it signed a cooperation agreement with the Spanish Banco Central Hispanoamericano.

In 1995, BCP acquired Banco Português do Atlântico. In 2000, the bank merged with Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor and Banco Mello. In the same year, a joint venture was established in Poland.

In 2001, Euromoney magazine named BCP the best bank in Portugal. In 2004, the bank rebranded as Millennium BCP. In 2012, a restructuring plan was presented; it was approved by the European Commission in 2013.

In 2016, the merger of Banco Millennium Angola with Banco Privado Atlântico was completed. This made the new bank the second-largest private financial institution in Angola. In 2019, BCP finalized the merger of Poland’s Bank Millennium with Euro Bank.

In 2021, the bank sold its stake in Banque Privée BCP, completing the transaction in November. In 2024, the Polish subsidiary Bank Millennium completed the implementation of its recovery plan.

Before the Millennium, the BCP brand appeared; the bank used its full name, Banco Comercial Português, with a geometric emblem. The logo represented the organization’s official status, Portuguese origins, and banking operations. Following the group’s expansion, the former identity no longer matched the new structure. Work on a unified brand for several banks began in the early 2000s.

Banco Comercial Português began operations on June 25, 1985. More than 200 shareholders created the bank in cooperation with financial industry specialists. The name translates as “Portuguese Commercial Bank,” while the abbreviation BCP comes from the first letters of the three words. For many years, the abbreviation remained the primary corporate name.

Banco Mello, Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor, and Banco Atlântico joined the group in the early 2000s. The organization now controlled several banks with different names. The combined structure needed a shared brand that retained a connection with Banco Comercial Português and worked for customers, partners, and international markets.

The old Banco Comercial Português logo consisted of an emblem and the company name. A diamond composed of four diagonal stripes appeared on the left. A smaller diamond was visible inside, with a triangular cutout on the right. One stripe contained three parallel gray lines of equal thickness positioned at a 45-degree angle. The repeating pattern gave the emblem a formal and orderly appearance.

The gray words Banco Comercial Português appeared on the right. The serif typeface had dense proportions and resembled Clarendon or Belizio. The first letter of each word was uppercase, while the remaining letters were lowercase. The name occupied one line and complemented the compact emblem.

The group introduced the Millennium bcp brand in October 2003. The new name brought several banks into one corporate system. “Millennium” was used because of its international sound and association with the future, development, and modern technology. The abbreviation “bcp” was retained to preserve the connection with Banco Comercial Português, founded in 1985.
