Cfsem: Brand overview

Philanthropists and civic leaders established the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan in Detroit in 1984 to create a permanent funding source for regional needs. It began with several million dollars, and its first president, Marvin Borisoff, shaped the grantmaking structure, governance model and early priorities.

By the early 1990s, the foundation had expanded its programs and formed partnerships with local businesses and charitable groups. Grants supported education, youth development, arts and culture. During the late 1990s, growing donations and assets financed neighborhood projects across Southeast Michigan and widened the foundation’s role in local community development.

In the early 2000s, the organization backed urban infrastructure, including the GreenWays network of bicycle and pedestrian routes connecting parts of the region. From 2005 to 2010, it increased support for small businesses, employment programs and vocational training as communities faced the effects of the 2008 financial crisis.

During the 2010s, funding concentrated on education, workforce development and scholarships for students from low-income families. Between 2015 and 2020, grants supported Detroit neighborhoods, historic building restoration, public spaces, entrepreneurship and innovation. By 2023, the foundation had become one of the region’s largest community organizations, managing substantial assets and supporting work in education, health, arts and local development.
