Polymer materials are used in construction, automotive manufacturing, and equipment production, serving as the basis for components, coatings, and insulation. Their properties determine the strength, flexibility, and durability of the products. The Covestro logo is associated with a company that manufactures high-tech polymers and chemical materials for industrial applications.

Covestro: Brand overview

The history of Covestro began in 1937, when chemist Otto Bayer in the Bayer company laboratory created the first polyurethane. It became the basis for the production of insulation materials and plastics used in various sectors. In the 1950s, rigid polyurethane foams were introduced for use in refrigerators. Later, Bayer developed polycarbonate, strengthening its position in the segment of innovative polymers.

In 2004, Bayer reorganized its Polymers division as Bayer MaterialScience. The main focus was on producing materials for the automotive, construction, and electronics industries. In 2014, the company announced the creation of an independent brand, Covestro. Its name reflected the ideas of collaboration, investment, and team strength.

Since September 1, 2015, the company has become independent while maintaining ties with Bayer as a subsidiary. On October 6 of the same year, Covestro shares began trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The initial public offering brought about 2.5 billion euros.

In 2017 and 2018, Bayer fully sold its stake in Covestro, thereby securing the company’s independence. Covestro focused its development on the production of polyurethanes and polycarbonates. These materials are supplied to leading sectors of global industry.

In October 2024, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company announced its intention to acquire Covestro for 14.7 billion euros. By December of the same year, more than 90 percent of shareholders supported the deal. This event opened a new stage in the company’s development as part of an international holding. The completion of the deal is expected in the second half of 2025.

Covestro Logo History

What is Covestro?

A German chemical company based in Leverkusen was created following the spin-off of the polymer materials division from a major holding. The company’s main focus is the production of polyurethanes and polycarbonates for the automotive, construction, and electrical industries, as well as for furniture manufacturing. The company operates through three segments: polyurethanes (about 51 percent of revenue), polycarbonates, and coatings with adhesives. The production network includes 50 sites across 14 countries.

Covestro’s history is connected to Bayer’s polymer research. Otto Bayer and his team in Leverkusen first synthesized polyurethane in 1937. Bayer later produced polyurethane materials under the Desmodur and Desmophen brands. During the 1950s, the group began industrial production of Makrolon polycarbonate.

Bayer announced plans to separate Bayer MaterialScience into an independent organization in September 2014. The Covestro name was introduced on June 1, 2015, and came into use on September 1. The company gained legal and economic independence. Its headquarters remained in Leverkusen, while Bayer AG initially remained a shareholder. Covestro shares began trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on October 6.

Landor developed the name, positioning, and brand system. Its specialists conducted interviews and workshops with Bayer MaterialScience employees and executives from different countries. The project covered the logo, identity guidelines, internal communications, and materials for the stock market listing. The agency prepared more than 2,000 name options and conducted an international trademark review. The work created a separate identity for Covestro and brought together employees of the former division.

The name Covestro combines parts of three English words. “Co” comes from “collaboration” and refers to cooperation. “Vest” comes from “investment” and relates to investments in modern production facilities. The ending “stro” comes from “strong” and represents strong positions in technology, the market, and the workforce.

The multicolored ring appeared with the Covestro name. Its circular form recalled the Bayer Cross emblem enclosed within a circle. A short opening on the right separated the new brand from Bayer’s system. The open ends were associated with new developments and scientific exploration.

The logo is built around the black word Covestro. The lowercase letters use a rounded sans-serif typeface. In the primary version, the name appears inside the ring. Other formats place it beside the circle. The ring has a short horizontal opening on the right.

Beginning at the upper edge of the opening and moving counterclockwise, the colors are purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and light blue. Adjacent shades blend through smooth transitions, forming a spectrum around the black name. The multiple colors represent the diversity of Covestro’s materials, technologies, ideas, and employees. The identity distinguished the brand from the blue-and-white color schemes common among chemical and industrial companies.

Landor connected the brand image with the three English descriptions “curious,” “courageous,” and “colorful.” The overall idea was named The Brighter Element and combined scientific work with a colorful identity. The launch included internal events and an international advertising campaign before the stock market listing.

Bayer sold its remaining Covestro shares in 2018. The company continued using the multicolored logo introduced in 2015.
