Harsco Environmental traces its origins to 1853, when Harrisburg Car Manufacturing Company began producing railway cars and industrial equipment in Pennsylvania. In 1890, related operations evolved into Harrisburg Pipe and Pipe Bending Company, later renamed Harrisburg Steel Corporation on February 27, 1935. Wartime production expanded the workforce to more than 5,000 employees.
Between 1953 and 1955, Harrisburg Steel acquired Heckett Engineering, Taylor-Wharton, and Precision Castings. Heckett, founded in 1939 by Eric Heckett, had developed large-scale recovery of metal from steelmaking by-products. On January 28, 1956, the businesses were combined as Harsco Corporation and listed on the New York Stock Exchange under HSC.
Further acquisitions included Fairmont Railway Motors in 1979 and Astralloy-Vulcan in 1982. A 2009 restructuring organized operations into Rail, Industrial, and Metals & Minerals. The last segment later became Harsco Environmental. ALTEK Group joined in 2018, followed by Clean Earth for $625 million in 2019 and Stericycle’s ESOL business for $462.5 million in April 2020, adding 13 permitted facilities and over 700 vehicles.
Harsco sold its Industrial division in January 2020. In June 2023, the parent company became Enviri Corporation and adopted the ticker NVRI, while Harsco Environmental kept its operating name. The business competed with companies such as SMS Group and Paul Wurth. It served about 70 steel plants at roughly 120 sites across 30 countries.
