The DaVita logo conveys professionalism in medical care. Its simple, formal style highlights the company’s business approach to healthcare services and its responsibility towards patients.

DaVita: Brand overview

DaVita’s history began in 1979 as part of National Medical Enterprises, initially focusing on outpatient services. In 1994, the company shifted its focus to dialysis care and was subsequently renamed Total Renal Care Holdings. It went public a year later and acquired Renal Treatment Centers in 1998, only to encounter integration problems and a severe crisis.

In 1999, Kent Thiry took over as CEO and initiated a deep transformation. The company rebranded as DaVita in 2000 and focused exclusively on the U.S. dialysis market. A major acquisition in 2005, Gambro Healthcare, made DaVita the leader in U.S. dialysis care.

In 2012, DaVita expanded into broader healthcare services by acquiring HealthCare Partners, but sold it to UnitedHealth Group in 2019, refocusing solely on dialysis. In 2019, Thiry stepped down after 20 years, succeeded by Javier Rodriguez.

Today, DaVita operates 2,675 dialysis centers in the U.S. and 367 internationally, serving over 200,000 patients. Berkshire Hathaway remains its largest shareholder.

What is DaVita?

It is a large medical services provider specializing in care for patients with chronic kidney disease. Its centers offer dialysis treatments, psychological support, and organ transplant counseling. The company has developed a new approach focused on patients’ quality of life and emotional well-being.

2000 – 2015

DaVita Logo 2000

The DaVita logo, used from 2000 to 2015, appeared after the rebranding of Total Renal Care, which changed its name and visual identity at the start of the new millennium. The decision to adopt the DaVita brand, a name with Italian roots meaning “to give life,” was driven by the need to create a positive, caring image for an organization focused on helping patients with chronic kidney disease.

The typography was set in a unique handwritten script with soft shapes and thin strokes, expressing the brand’s individuality and humanistic approach. The central feature of the composition was the large “V,” designed as an expressive upward arc ending in a yellow five-pointed star that replaced the dot over the lowercase “i.” The star, visually reminiscent of a spark or flash, served as a vivid metaphor for hope, healing, and the beginning of a new stage in patients’ lives.

The color palette was chosen to reflect the brand’s medical focus. The primary blue shade symbolizes confidence, trust, sterility, and professionalism, and is common in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. The contrasting yellow star added emotional emphasis, drawing the eye and reinforcing the company’s positive, patient-focused image.

The logo’s typeface was created specifically for DaVita and has no exact equivalents. It is closely related in style to calligraphic sans-serif fonts, characterized by smooth lines and delicate curves. The design decision to place the star over the “i” became a signature element of the brand, underscoring care and dedication to life and health.

As a result, DaVita’s visual presentation became a powerful symbol of the brand’s transformation. It helped the company strengthen its position as a leader in dialysis and treatment for chronic kidney disease in the United States.

2015 – today

DaVita Logo

The DaVita logo, in use since 2015, represents a visual evolution of the previous version, adapted to modern perception and the digital environment. Key elements that had become integral to the brand’s image were preserved but visually softened and refined.

The word “DaVita” is set in a custom rounded sans-serif typeface that visually resembles fonts such as Myriad Pro Rounded or Avenir Rounded. This choice, with its soft, smooth lines and moderate stroke thickness, emphasizes the brand’s warmth and humanistic values. The letter “V” is given special emphasis, with its upper left stroke forming a smooth arc that leads the eye upward toward the star above the adjacent “i.”

The yellow five-pointed star to the right of the “V” symbolizes care, optimism, and vitality. It is designed with a sense of dynamism. It appears visually larger than in the previous version, creating a clearer and more positive image.

The brand’s blue has been made brighter and more saturated, closer to the RGB #0071C5 shade officially known as DaVita Blue. The yellow of the star (RGB #FBBE10) serves as an additional accent, conveying patient support and care while reinforcing positive associations with the brand.

The logo’s perception was tested among patients and staff, who confirmed that the new design evokes feelings of care, attentiveness, and a human touch, while also meeting modern expectations for the visual identity of a major healthcare company.
