Duke Health traces its origins to 1925, when James Buchanan Duke established the Duke Endowment to support medical education and healthcare development in North Carolina. Central to his vision was the creation of a medical school, hospital, and nursing service affiliated with Duke University.
In 1930, Duke School of Medicine and Duke Hospital opened their doors with an initial class of 30 medical students and a 400-bed facility. During the 1940s and 1950s, Duke expanded its clinical programs and research initiatives, establishing North Carolina’s first cerebral palsy clinic in 1950.
In the 1960s, Duke Health expanded its research capacity by inaugurating a dedicated research building in 1963. Notably, it performed the state’s first successful kidney transplant during this decade.
The Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, now known as the Duke Cancer Institute, was founded in the 1970s and became one of the first comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute. Duke Life Flight, an air ambulance service launched in the 1980s, enhanced access to emergency care across the region.
Major organizational restructuring occurred in 1998 with the formation of the Duke University Health System, which combined Duke University Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital, and affiliated institutions. The opening of the Duke Medicine Pavilion in 2004 significantly expanded specialized medical services.

1998 – today
The creation of Duke Health as an integrated medical structure in 1998 also marked the beginning of its visual identity. By uniting university divisions and a network of regional clinics, the organization established itself as a unified healthcare system. The logo was designed to emphasize both its academic foundation and practical activities.
The emblem consists of two interconnected parts. On the left is a blue square with a shield shape inside. The shield features a notched top resembling a fortress wall, visually evoking themes of protection and reliability. The internal structure of the shield is executed as a multilayered white design that can be interpreted as an open book or pages. The image symbolizes the intellectual component and the connection with university tradition. Blue and white together make the form more expressive and highlight its structure.
The text block is on the right. The name Duke Health is typed in a sans-serif font, similar to The Sans, which the brand officially adopted for its communication. In the word ‘Duke’, the lines are slightly thicker compared to the lighter ‘Health’. Both words begin with a capital letter but are joined without a space, creating a compact and unified visual rhythm.
The color system is based on the dominance of blue, associated with medicine, intellectual activity, and stability. White is used for the internal elements of the shield, providing contrast and clarity and enhancing the perception of detail.
