As a result, the brand gained popularity and earned genuine admiration from its audience for the high quality, original identity, and visual appeal of its products.

Ecko Unltd: Brand overview

Ecko Unltd began in New Jersey in 1993, when Marc Ecko, born Marc Miletsky, started printing graphic T-shirts in his parents’ garage. He financed the project with $5,000 borrowed from his sister and sold early designs directly to stores around New York. The name came from his graffiti tag, while “Unltd” referred to “unlimited.”

A breakthrough came in 1994, when Macy’s ordered 500 shirts. By 1996, annual revenue had reached $15 million, and the range expanded into jeans, jackets and other streetwear. Seth Gersz, Ecko’s childhood friend, joined as chief financial officer. Partnerships with hip-hop artists and athletes helped the label reach a wider audience during the late 1990s.

Ecko Red launched in 2000 as a womenswear line, alongside the first New York flagship. Footwear followed in 2001, when revenue reached $263 million. Stores opened in Japan and Europe in 2002, while Complex magazine launched in 2004 as a media project focused on music, pop culture and street fashion. Revenue peaked at $1.55 billion in 2006.

The 2008 financial crisis and stronger competition weakened sales, leading Iconix Brand Group to acquire a controlling stake in 2009. Ecko remained creative director. Anniversary collections appeared in 2013, a restrained adult line followed in 2015, and digital sales expanded through a redesigned website and mobile app in 2018. From 2020 to 2023, the company updated its collections and continued projects with artists and musicians.

The brand’s identity is one of the most striking and memorable. Red, an unwavering symbol of passion, is a source of energy and strength, making it a perfect fit for a modern brand. Thus, a rich and expressive tone was chosen among all possible shades.

The logo features only graphic elements on a white background; the brand intentionally avoided text, aiming to attract customers with a unique, presentable visual image. Standing out against this backdrop is the image of a massive, powerful animal.

For centuries, rhinos have evoked deep respect and instilled awe and even fear in people. Their power and strength symbolize the brand’s reliability, perfectly aligning with the quality and durability of its products. However, this choice was not dictated solely by product qualities.

The founder was always captivated by small rhino figurines from his father’s collection. In tribute, he incorporated the rhino image into the Ecko Unltd logo. The rhino brought the brand success, becoming a symbol of triumph.

A geometric figure divided into four parts surrounds the rhino, adding a unique charm to the animal’s image. The wide red elements are often associated with a target, but in this case, they serve as a contour, drawing attention to the rhino figure facing left.
