The Familia logo looks like a kind sign, promising comfort and care. The lines and details create a sense of coziness, a home where everything is made for convenience. It is an image of closeness, friendliness, and simplicity that is easy to understand and accept.
Grupo Familia began in Medellín in December 1958, when Jon Gómez Restrepo and Mario Uribe registered a small company called URIGO. It started by importing Waldorf toilet paper from the US company Scott Paper Company. Colombia’s paper hygiene market was still undeveloped, but demand soon showed that regular supply had commercial potential.
Importing was only a first stage. The company bought paper-making equipment in Japan, built production facilities, and, in 1966, launched its first toilet roll under the Familia name. That year marked the birth of the brand in its modern form. A partnership with Scott Paper Co. brought US manufacturing know-how. At the same time, Familia became closely linked with household paper in Colombia.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded beyond toilet paper. Pétalo kitchen and hand towels appeared in 1970. Nosotras sanitary pads launched in 1975 and became a major local product in women’s hygiene. Pequeñín baby wipes followed in 1982, with Nosotras pantyliners and Pequeñín diapers added in 1984.
In 1986, Scott Paper Co. left the shareholding, and the company became Productos Familia. A new alliance with Sweden’s Mölnlycke, later part of SCA, led to Productos Sanitarios Sancela S.A. for Nosotras. Facing Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble, Familia expanded into Chile, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. It bought Algodonera Aconcagua in Argentina in 2009 and Industrial Papelera Ecuatoriana in 2018. In August 2021, Essity acquired 95.8% of Grupo Familia, while Familia, Nosotras, and Pequeñín kept their names in Latin America.
