FEMSA (Fomento Economico Mexicano) Logo PNG
Buying coffee at a small shop near home or a bottle of locally bottled beverage seems like part of an ordinary day, even though a large business structure lies behind such actions. The FEMSA (Fomento Económico Mexicano) logo is associated with a Mexican group that operates the OXXO store chain, bottles and distributes beverages, including Coca-Cola products, and conducts commercial operations in various countries.
Fomento Economico Mexicano, or FEMSA, was founded in 1890 in Monterrey. The company began operations as the brewery Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc. Its products gained recognition through the brands Carta Blanca and Bohemia. By 1909, the company had established its own glass bottle production, enabling it to fully integrate the production cycle. In 1943, the company received a license to bottle Coca-Cola and became one of the corporation’s first partners in Latin America.
In 1978, the company underwent a reorganization and became FEMSA Holding. It included the brewery, beverage bottling units, and industrial assets. In the 1980s, the Coca-Cola business began to expand, leading to the creation of the subsidiary Coca-Cola FEMSA. In 1993, its shares were listed on the stock exchanges of Mexico and New York. The Coca-Cola Company acquired thirty percent of the shares.
In 1997, the company opened the first OXXO store in Monterrey. By 2010, the company had sold the brewery to Heineken for $7.3 billion. It retained a twenty percent stake and focused on retail and beverage production.
Since the 2010s, the company has accelerated the development of the OXXO chain, opening hundreds of new stores each year. By 2015, the number of locations exceeded fourteen thousand. By 2023, the total had reached more than 21,000. At the same time, Coca-Cola FEMSA expanded operations in Brazil, Uruguay, and other countries in the region.
In 2024, FEMSA began offering financial services in the OXXO network. Customers gained access to money transfers and microloans.
The company operates more than twenty-two thousand stores across Latin America. It remains the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottler and retains a stake in Heineken.

1974 – today
The burgundy FEMSA wordmark appeared following the 1988 financial restructuring and became the group’s new name. The logo consists of five letters and relies entirely on the wordmark. The short name united different business areas and replaced VISA, the designation used during the early development of the industrial companies.
The group’s history began in Monterrey in November 1890. Isaac Garza, José Calderón, José Antonio Muguerza, Francisco Sada, and Joseph M. Schnaider founded Fábrica de Hielo y Cerveza Cuauhtémoc. The brewery later became Cervecería Cuauhtémoc and formed the foundation of the future corporation. Valores Industriales, S.A., abbreviated as VISA, was established in 1936 to manage the growing number of businesses.
The name FEMSA came into use following the creation of Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A. de C.V. in 1988. The full Spanish name translates as “Mexican Economic Development Company.” “Fomento” refers to support and growth, “Económico” indicates economic activity, and “Mexicano” identifies the group’s origin. The abbreviation was formed from the initial letters of the full name.
The transition from VISA to FEMSA coincided with a change in the business structure. The former name referred to a management company overseeing industrial enterprises. The new name suited a diversified corporation operating in several industries and countries. The shortened form allowed different divisions to use one name and covered a broad range of products and manufacturing activities.
The logo consists of the FEMSA wordmark in a dark burgundy wine color close to Pantone 202 C. All letters are uppercase and use a sans-serif typeface. The letterforms combine thin and broad sections within the strokes. Narrow spacing brings the word together into a compact horizontal block.
The main custom detail appears in the letter “A.” Its shape differs from standard sans-serif versions, giving the name its own distinctive form. The modified letter allows the short wordmark to function independently as a corporate signature.
