George Washington University: Brand overview

George Washington University began in 1821, when the U.S. Congress granted a charter to a group of Baptist ministers and laymen in Washington, D.C. The school first operated as Columbian College on land near the present U.S. Treasury Building, between 14th and 15th Streets. Financial problems marked its first years, but support from President James Monroe and other public figures helped it continue. Monroe and the Marquis de Lafayette attended the 1824 commencement.

In 1873, the college broadened its academic work by opening law, medical, and dental schools. That expansion led to the name Columbian University. In 1904, following a proposal by university president Charles Needham, the institution was renamed in honor of George Washington. In 1912, it moved to Foggy Bottom, where it became more closely tied to public, political, and academic life in the U.S. capital.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the university expanded further. It took part in military training and defense-related research during World War II. A student union opened in 1954, while political science and international relations became stronger areas of study. In the 1960s and 1970s, its location in Washington, D.C. placed the campus near student protests against the Vietnam War.

Later development included the Mount Vernon campus in 1981 and major construction in the 1990s. From 2007 to 2017, a fundraising campaign raised over $1 billion for research, scholarships, and institutional growth. New milestones followed with a public health building in 2012, the Textile Museum in 2014, Vision 2021 in 2015, the 500,000-square-foot Science and Engineering Hall in 2016, an innovation center in 2017, expanded online programs in 2019, stronger digital infrastructure in 2021, interdisciplinary research programs in 2022, and new global partnerships in 2023.

The Seal

The central element of the university seal is a portrait of George Washington, after whom the institution is named. The portrait is placed inside a shield, symbolizing protection and the university’s core values. At the top of the shield is an open book, likely the Bible, inscribed in Greek. The book represents wisdom and knowledge, and its position on the shield emphasizes the importance of faith and spirituality in the educational process. The shield and the book are linked to the university’s Baptist roots, highlighting the founders’ belief in God as the source of science and knowledge.

The university’s motto, “Deus Nobis Fiducia,” around the shield, translates from Latin as “God is our trust.” This motto reflects the religious and spiritual convictions of the institution’s founders.

The outer edge of the seal bears the name of the university and the year of its founding, 1821. The entire design is executed in thin blue lines, giving the seal a sense of lightness and elegance. The only bold element is George Washington’s portrait against a blue background, drawing attention to the historical figure for whom the university is named.
